Even many people from South Louisiana who live near alligators don’t know the difference. They might look kind of similar, but they’re very different animals.

Gators have a broader and more rounded snout. The crocs have v-shaped snouts. Crocodiles are much, much more aggressive than alligators, and they are not scared of humans like alligators are. Crocodiles are also bigger than alligators.

Crocodiles can only live in tropical areas because they can’t tolerate cold weather. Alligators on the other hand can live in subtropical and temperature regions because they can tolerate more cold than crocs.

Because one sees you later. The other sees you in a while.

Is there a reason why we should know?

Are they though? Both large, similar looking, carnivorous aquatic reptiles

Also, there are no porpoises in Louisiana

We don't have porpoises in Louisiana, they're dolphin...

There is a lot of confusion between what is a porpoise and what is a dolphin especially here in south Louisiana; allow me to clarify

The "Porpoises" You See In Grand Isle are Dolphin

quote:

At that time, I was told by every fishermen elderly or young that the dolphins I was seeing where “porpoises,” not dolphins. I believed this till just the other day when I randomly decided to wiki what the difference between a porpoise and a dolphin was. I found there are several distinctions between dolphins and porpoises; and was shocked to find that what my father had been telling me where “porpoises” my entire life are in fact bottlenose dolphins.

While both porpoises and dolphins are part of the family Delphinidae, there are visible distinctions.

I highly doubt this.

They have crocs in S. Florida and I've read that they aren't aggressive like the ones in Africa and the Asian salties.

There aren't any of either anywhere near where I live, why should I give a shite about knowing?

Also, if I ever encounter either kind, pretty my plan of getting the frick away from it is going to be the same

As I understand it, you see an alligator later, and a crocodile after awhile.
