The right handed first baseman should have had his right foot on the bag which would have allowed for him to stretch further and possibly catch the ball. That is a basic fundamental but I see this improper footwork frequently by today's players. I would like to see a a clear video of the play but it sure seems like he could have caught it using proper mechanics.

Now analyze everything the catcher did on the play.

Unlike a routine grounder to another infield spot, on that play with a throw coming from behind the runner down the 1st base line, the 1st baseman is supposed to square up to the catcher on either the outside or inside of the bag and give them a target/throwing lane.

Pretty standard stuff. Jones did what he was supposed to do.

No it isn’t

If the throw was where it was supposed to be then he was in the correct position for it. He would’ve been in the baseline if he stretched with his right foot on the bag.

On a ball coming from the catcher??? Jones was squared up and in the right position. It was a horrible throw guys. Leave it alone. Milazzo makes that 19 out of 20 times but didn’t last night.

Does Chicken get a cut from Milazzo’s PR agency?

The decision and throw from the catcher was horrendous. Watch the play. That ball was thrown into another area code.

Yes I’m sure having his right foot on the bag, meaning his back would be facing where the throw went, would have greatly increased his chances of catching the ball.

He did what he was supposed to do

I will continue to wear being told on this board “you don’t know baseball” as a badge of honor

This is not true when receiving a ball from home.

Jones makes the play if Milazzo doesn’t try to throw it like he’s a shortstop.

You are 1000% wrong and completely out of your element. 1B squares up with the catcher on those plays and doesn't stretch.

Is the runner no longer required to run in the lane?

This is laughably wrong. On a play like that the basic fundamental is to use your left foot so that you give the fielder a square target to throw to.

In a bunt situation (or where the ball is hit similar to a bunt) the proper mechanics is to have left foot on the bag. It allows for better mobility and keeps the first baseman protected from having to turn with his back into the path and getting trucked.

Yes after he saw where the ball was thrown.

I may be wrong here, but I always thought that if given time the first baseman should put both heels against the bag and face the player throwing v the ball from the infield and only react to the throw by stepping into cstch the ball.

In the case of this play the step would have been to the left with his left foot; however, if the throw was towards the second baseman he would leave his left foot on the base and step right as needed.

There is no predetermined foot on the bag.
