Unlike a routine grounder to another infield spot, on that play with a throw coming from behind the runner down the 1st base line, the 1st baseman is supposed to square up to the catcher on either the outside or inside of the bag and give them a target/throwing lane.
Pretty standard stuff. Jones did what he was supposed to do.

And the catcher has to throw it right at him. If it’s thrown too far left or right, the first baseman is screwed. It’s a tough play, which is why Milazzo should not have called the pitcher off. Getting the runner out at home was the safest play.

I have no issue with Jones. It looked to me like he was making himself a big target towards the most open part of the throwing lane.
