re: Was Jay Johnson too loyal to his returning roster?

This team lost a lot of the lineup after last season. People need to deal with it. Would you have rather had a loaded team last season and not bring home a championship and have a good season this season with no guarantee to win it all or win it all last year and rebuild this year and maybe next season because the lineup was depleted? I'll take the championship every few years and rebuild when necessary. Still the best baseball program in the country.

I just think Jay should have been more agressive in the portal
he knew Crews, Morgan, Beloso, Dugas, Joebert, and Thompson were gon.
thats 6/9 batters
and we brought in Bradwell and Bingham.
coming into the season we he had 3 Jr and 1 Sr penciled into the lineup and 3 sophmores and 2 true freshmen.
thats not ideal.

I think the biggest downfall is obviously Hurd. He really believed he was not only a starter but the top starter on the team coming into the season. turns out he's a mid-level bullpen arm at this point. Thats where we got hurt the most. Just way too much trust in a guy that outside of nice run in the CWS was hyper inconsistent and frankly not very good last season.
About Kling/Neal, these guys were top guys in their class, just hadnt got a ton of run as freshmen really so I would say most of us also believed they would pul through in year 2, especially with Neal's thing just being injury. We had other options for those guys, we didnt really for Hurd. We had Trav/Milazzo at catcher if Neal didnt work out (he hasnt). We had a number of outfield options if Kling didnt pull through, but for whatever reason some of those guys didnt get much run. Brown was a little nicked up so thats part of it, and Larson got his shot, but whatever happened to Ruddell is anyone's guess. Basically no real shot this season in year 2. Mic Paul got no run either (not saying he should, but he simply didnt in year 2). Derrick Mitchell no playing time either, but also a freshman. Just hard to understand the line of thinking there sticking with Kling so much.
Didnt help Bingham didnt really work out either after smashing last season.

It's how you build long-term success. You give guys time to grow.
The problem is, most of those individuals have not performed. You would think the Jrs and Sr would carry the team while the sophs and freshmen came along. They upperclassmen didn't carry and the sophs look lost. The true freshman have done well which wil pay dividends in future seasons.

we went after some guys we didn't get. It happens.
Hell, one of them we went after, Cannon Peebles from NC State (catcher), committed to Tennessee and barely plays there. He starts at DH sometimes. Has 25 starts this year and 99 ABs. He's also only hitting .232
We also didn't land Billy Amick out of Clemson or Colby Shelton out of Alabama. But, we went more portal heavy on pitchers because we expected hitters to improve who just didn't,.
Regardless, you don't want to build a team with just the portal. If you do, you're going to be forced to completely rebuild your roster every off season

I mean Tommy White and Braswell were 2 of our strongest bats.
Travinski was pretty good up till the A&M series.
going into that weekend he was hitting .293 with 7 HR
The issue has been that we had black holes in our lineup that produced almost nothing.

I just don't know how we got run over in the portal. And yeah, I know we got a meaningless ranking that claimed we had the second best portal class, but that was mostly based on getting Holman and Jump who were top end available players. But other teams did a much better job of filling holes throughout their rosters, whereas we really didn't do near enough to offset the losses to our lineup.
I don't know if we just got beat out for players, or if it was that Jay had too much confidence in guys like Kling, Frey, Neal and his top incoming freshmen to step up and produce. and didn't really put much emphasis on hitters in the portal. Mac Bingham's track record prior to last year seemed to suggest his numbers may have been a little fluky last year, to me. Seems like maybe that was the case. But he was the big get on the position player side.
In years past, when you had a mass exodus of talented players in one offseason, it was just one of those things that happens, and you had to accept that you were going to need a lot of young guys to step up, or you were going to struggle. But in the age of the portal, where the top teams are just buying whatever they need and reloading every year, there was really no excuse for LSU, coming off a national title, to get left in the dust. Also, player development is overall lagging behind.

"I’ve heard that players are pissed because regardless of how he plays he’s constantly in the lineup while Jay holds others accountable"
-No you haven't
-No you haven't

I think he expected guys like Neal, Kling, and Hurd to take that next step and none have.

What happened in between those appearances? Is only hosting one regional in five seasons acceptable?
At Arizona? Yes, along with two trips to the CWS with one ending in the National Runner-Up.
