Shaq isn't from LA just went to LSU. Looking at Karl Malone's stats I still don't know if Shaq is better than him.

Well Shaq was not born in Louisiana

If you are going by born in Louisiana your options are Bill Russell, Clyde Drexler, and Karl Malone

If you are going by went to high school in Louisiana the two most productive at the NBA level were probably Malone and Parish

The NBA 75th Anniversary team has

Russell
Pettit
Malone
Drexler
Elvin Hayes
Willis Reed
Robert Parish

Not bad for a state the size of Louisiana.

Bill Russell is the most overrated player of all-time. He averaged like 15 points a game. Sure, he got a lot of rebounds and played good defense, but that’s like calling Rudy Gobert one of the goats.

Also, let’s not forget he played at a time when there were only 8 teams in the league and the team he played on was stacked beyond belief. The entire starting lineup plus the sixth man were all-stars. You win one series and you’re in the Finals. You win two series total and you’re NBA champions. That’s why he has 11 rings.

You clearly don't understand an era when defense was valued more than offense. He was one if not the best defender of all time. The team was never an offensive powerhouse and he got those 15 with a lot of good players on the floor with him. Go back and look how they did with him off the floor, if basketball had a simple WAR stat I think you would be amazed. Russell won 5 MVPs at a time the players voted for the winner. The only way Bill Russell is highly overrated is if one is making a GOAT argument but even then he is an easy Top 5 argument and would be a consensus Top 10. Recency bias is the only thing holding him back now.

I’ll listen to the people who played and coached with him and against him. He was also one of the greatest college players of all time.

Michael Rappaport was interviewing Dick Barnett for a 70’s Knicks Documentary and told him he thought Russell was the most overrated player of all time. The look on Barnett’s face was priceless and he said “ you know I thought you knew a little bit about basketball until you said that”.

well said

also consider that back then in the 1960s the game was actually played at a break neck speed and points per game was sky high. Russell being the absolute best defensive player in an offensive league was extremely valuable to the Celtics.

1960 Avg PPG Team 115
1961 118
1962 118
1963 115
1964 111
1965 110
1966 115
1967 117
1968 116
1969 112

the 1960s is by far the greatest offensive era in league history, yet the League was dominated by the team with arguably the greatest defensive player in league history.
