Pregnant woman, unborn child killed after tree falls on home in West Baton Rouge Parish

LINK

A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed after a tree fell on their home during the line of severe storms that moved through Monday night, UWK has learned.

The tragedy happened just after 7 p.m. on May 13 on Rougon Rd. near Erwinville in West Baton Rouge Parish. This occurred during the most intense phase of tornado-warned storms in the Capital region.

Paramedics faced significant challenges in responding to the scene, with debris blocking the roadway. Paramedics had to walk roughly a mile to get to the home.

When they got there, they found an entire family trapped inside the home. Tragically, the woman, who was approximately nine months pregnant, and her unborn child had succumbed to their injuries. A man from the household was critically injured and transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, while another child in the home emerged unharmed.

The name of the pregnant woman killed during the severe storms has not been released at this time.

Severe weather impacted that area last night and damaged a lot of homes. Debris blocked roads badly enough so that ambulances couldn't get to the home.

West Baton Rouge, Pointe Coupee, and West Feliciana also had a tornado outbreak on April 11th. Seems like tornado season broadened this year. Usually it's concentrated between I-20 and I-70. It's definitely reached down to I-10 and as far north as I-90.

ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KADN) — St. Martin Parish Sheriff Becket Breaux and Henderson Mayor Sherbin Collette confirmed the severe weather that moved across Acadiana claimed at least one life.

The officials said it happened on the outskirts of Henderson. The victim's name was not given.

Mom just sold the piece of land at the North end of Toledo Bend that has been hit by 5 tornadoes in the last 60 years. Forgot to tell the buyer about those.

We had a massive oak tree in our backyard growing up and one of the biggest arms of it hung over my parents and my bedroom. Mom had the whole thing taken down to prevent this very thing. So fricking sad.

People would be much better off if they would get out of their heads that tornadoes are limited to some geographical area and understand that they can and do happen just about anywhere, especially in the Southeast.

Here is a map of past tornadoes from the area:

Isn't it amazing how there's none that track over the basin swamp?

Kidding - I know it's from the lack of visual reports and decades of terrible radar coverage.

I almost got killed during Hurricane Sally when an oak tree basically split the house I was renting in half. Luckily I had just walked out of the den when it happened. The first thing I did when I bought my house was cut all the trees down, but I'm still a nervous wreck when any storm comes through.
