I think I caught some bullhead catfish in the basin. Nice size 3-4 lbs. Semi forked tail but more flat than forked. Long and thin fish as opposed to short and fat. Clean fillets. Darker fish than channels but some yellowish coloring too. Dark whiskers. Definitely not blue cats. Don’t think they are yellow enough to be Ops. I can’t figure out how to attach pics or I would.

Anyway if they are bullheads. are they good to eat? As good as channel cats?

Sounds like bullhead, they're more slimey than a regular catfish. Never tried eating one myself.

*missed the 3-4 lb part. All of the ones ive seen are between 6-12 inches long.

The term "Mudcat" has different meanings to different people, but Bullheads are what we call mudcats. And they are not to good to eat. I don't believe I have ever seen a 4lb mudcat though, so maybe you are talking about something different.

You might have caught some smallish flatheads.

Sound like MASSIVE bullheads. Depending on the kind of bullhead they'd either be world records, close to world records or about half the size of a world record....which would be akin to an 11 pound largemouth bass,,,,

We used to eat them all the time and they were fine. If it was mixed bag of channel and bullhead fillets fried up most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference in them, at least in our area. I suspect that may be different depending on where they're caught. Id give them a try since they are filleted. If they ain't no good the dog will probably eat them.

Actually, there are 2 (or possibly 3) species of bullheads/mud cats in Louisiana. The two main ones are brown bullheads (tiny ones) and yellow bullheads, and yellow can get quite a bit bigger. I'm guessing that may be what you caught, as I've caught some of those on the past with channel cats and they've eaten just fine.

They are great eating when caught from moving freshwater sources. I’m not a fan of catfish from ponds though.

Don't listen to this guy. They aren't flat head or channel cats but they eat good.

It's all about personal preference. Some people only eat wild crawfish, while others are the total opposite. Go ahead and try them and you might be surprised in a good way, or maybe not! I wouldn't let other people's opinion sway your decision!

I’ve never tried, but I can tell you do not get drunk and fry any stingray.

These weren’t slimy at all. Less so. When filleting with electric knife the skin had a tendency to stay in when I’ve never filleted a catfish when not drunk that the flip and skin didn’t work perfect.

These all were 15-18 inches long I’d guess.

3-4lbs Bull Cats are freaking huge! The largest bullhead cat ever caught in the states was 9lbs in Michigan so you caught some units!

Largest I have ever caught was probably 12”. Let’s us know how they taste!!

I’m hoping this provides a picture of the cats so identification might be easier. Thanks

That looks like a White Catfish. There are catfish ID charts on the net. Check one out.

As others have said a 3 lb bullhead is a monster.
Are they good to eat, yes if caught early in spring when water is cold. When water warms up they start to taste muddy. Up here they are often the first fish caught at creek mouths in the spring and they are tasty then.

Unless you are starving to death, or are some inbred dumbfrick coonass, I wouldn't suggest eating a mudcat.
