GULF OF MEXICO (KADN) — Imagine being in a boat off the Louisiana coast when you see something that's not supposed to be there. In this case, an island was found near St. Mary Parish. But how did it get there?

Just off the coast of Morgan City, a brand new island has appeared, discovered just days ago.

The island has a sandy shore and is located about nine miles off the Louisiana coast.

Lafayette native Harold Shoeffler discovered the island, and while it is unnamed at this time, don't be surprised to see it renamed Harold Island.

Unfortunately, the surface is similar to quicksand, and standing on it is impossible. But birds are much lighter, so it is now a hotspot for brown pelicans and other seabirds.

This new island is 2,000 feet by 500 feet, and the Coast Guard is now mapping the new addition for navigation. Not much is known about how the island actually formed. LSU is currently studying the island and seems to think its formation has to do with dredging projects.

The coolest part is if we can study how this island formed, it could revolutionize coastal restoration and give us even more protection against storm surge from hurricanes.

To get a better look, we will be visiting the island in person next week. So stay tuned. It's going to be a fun trip.

In my day, we'd just call that a "Sandbar".

agreed - but 9 miles offshore is odd for a sandbar to appear, at least I would think it would be

It's a sandbar. My completely unfounded hypothesis is that is was formed by the extra wave action/ extremely mild storm surge from Hurricane Beryl as it made it's way across the Gulf.

eta: Or exactly like they think, it's from dredging the Atchafalaya River shipping channel.

An island you can’t stand on because you’d just sink…

Yeah, that sounds like a sandbar.

Quicksand Island sounds like a place from a children's adventure story, from back when I thought quicksand would be more of a concern in my life than it turned out to be.,

That's kinda large (TWSS) to appear out of nowhere and no one else saw it. It had to be a relatively sudden formation (like a couple of weeks at most), right?

Sounds more like a "Quicksand Bar" if you can sink into it when trying to stand on it.
