Entourage = Sex in the City

I was thinking the other day how much hate sex in the city got on this board (and everywhere, really). It's funny how Entourage is the same show as SitC yet the double standards prevent men from realizing their just as vain and material as the women they supposedly loathe.
how come there is no overwhelming misandry (men hating) compared to the rampant misogyny for women who are self-aware of their own sexuality?
does it show a deep seated insecurity in men who display this double standard?
do these men fear women who have sexual and monetary free will?
does anyone hate both shows?

A quartet of single friends talk frankly about the opposite sex, compare conquests, and acquire designer goods. They may not swap stories over flan and cosmos, but they do a kind of girl talk at the Playboy Mansion or Barneys — Sex haunts, too. Plus, they support each other, albeit in a slap-on-the-back kind of way. While one-night stands come and go, both shows rarely stray from the foursome and their lasting bond.

When Entourage premiered on HBO in July, it was hailed by critics as the male version of Sex and the City—a half-hour comedy about four friends enjoying a lifestyle of nonstop sexual conquest and conspicuous consumption in a glitzy coastal city.
quote:
Sex and the City's appeal was that it provided a conflict-free fantasy for female viewers. Whether or not you cared about (or could afford) $400 shoes or the latest downtown restaurant, the posh Manhattan setting provided a yummy backdrop against which to ponder the dilemmas of adult female life. But Entourage's quartet of buddies ups the ante considerably: They're not only rich and glamorous, they're young and, at least by proxy, famous. Their biggest problems are whether to lease a Rolls-Royce, what movie deal to accept, and how to retain their self-respect in the sycophantic world of Hollywood. The boys chase tail, procure dope, and tool around town in a bright yellow Hummer, until ... well, until the half-hour is up. Entourage is one of the most conflict-free shows in recent memory. Each episode revolves around good-natured, low-stakes banter and includes little if any action—an unusual choice in a show blatantly aimed at capturing the coveted 18- to 34-year-old male audience.

by having a flash of 'hey! they're the same shows!' as it turns out, other people had the same insight.

they're both legitimately funny.

As a huge Entourage fan, I actually never minded Sex and the City when it was on HBO. Thought it was pretty damn funny.
Haven't seen either movie though.

that's fair enough. i'd also like to note i'm not trying to attack entourage fans or anything, but I'm using it as the best example of a show about male escapist fantasy compared to it's exact mirror image in SitC.

Maybe that's why I don't watch either.

Cough, you're so enlightened.

I think the issue is the fan cults surrounding each show, of which SitC's is bordering on religious fervor, and Entourage's is barely existent.

I think SitC is more visible because of the fact that the show has been off the air for 6-7 years, so when massive movie hype/marketing reanimates the the series in the form of a movie, its loyal fan base is understandably excited and vocal.
there seems to be a pretty big following for entourage on this board and among a lot of people i know irl.
i'd be interested to see entourage take the same pattern of ending the series and then making a movie ~4 years later

Well, I don't really see Entourage as having the type of following that SitC has, but I admit I could be wrong.
But I will say this: Just as females that movied to NYC to live the 'SitC' life, any guys that move to LA to live the 'Entourage' life, deserve derision.

Ok, could be wrong b/c I've only watched like 3 eps of SitC, but these women are trying to learn more about themselves and relationships whereas in entourage there's no life lesson.
Plus none of the women in Entourage look like a horse.

Pretty damn good point. Now I have something to counter all the pricks who like Entourage with.

i think everyone is negating to take into account that men are funnier than women.

Actually, I like SITC (though the idea of the movies makes me ill -- let it go, girls). It was a funny show with some interesting characters.
Entourage, OTOH, is not funny at all. It's pretty damn boirng, and the only interesting character is Avi.
but I agree they are the same show and it perfectly highlights people's inherent misogyny.

I'm going with Sex AND the City is aimed at chicks, so more chicks than men will like the show.
Entourage is aimed and dudes and more dudes will like it.
I like both shows and can see the similarity with the primary exception being one is aimed at 35'ish women and the other at 25'ish dudes.
But, I've been wrong before...
