If the four deserving teams are from the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC, more than likely the committee will make sure the Big 12 and SEC –- no matter what the ranking, because there’s a difference between ranking and seeding –- will play in the new bowl game created between the two leagues, and the Big Ten and Pac-12 will almost certainly play each other in the Rose Bowl. At the same time, the SEC will get what it wants with a fallback in case it has two juggernauts like it did in 2011.
So if SEC and Big 12 are #1 and #2 they could play a semifinal while #3 and #4 go at it in a the other semi

LSU lost the national title last year because they played and beat Oregon. Had they not scheduled that game, or even lost it, Alabama does not play for the national title and LSU still does (against Oregon)
Damn, I never even thought of that

Last year was such an anomaly, and given the events that played out throughout the season
I agree, but the same logic applies if you want to argue a 4 team conference winners only playoff is no good because it leaves Alabama out. in the 14 years of the BCS 5 times the top 4 were all conference winners, 3 times in was 4 or the top 5. 3 others 4 of the top 6. In the other 2 years, The lowest ranked 4th conference winner were : 01 #8 Illinois 10-1, 03 #7 10-2 FSU and 11 #10 Wisconsin.
In 2001 replacing 10-1 NU with 10-1 Ill is hardly a crime. That leaves 2 years out of 14 were a team that would be left out, you could argue should have been in 03 OU and 11 Bama. OU lost the CCG, but did still have the best record in their conference. Bama was 2nd in their conference. They were a great team, but if LSU or even OSU had won, no one would care they were left out.

I'm a big SEC homer but I really don't see the point in multiple teams from teh SEC in a four team playoff unless there are truly exceptional circumstances. I felt that way in 2006 when LSU had a team that might have beaten anyone in a playoff FWIW - so this isn't a newly acquired philosophy of convenience
The regular season is supposed to mean something after all - and if we take multiple teams from teh same conference we greatly lessen the value of winning the original games between those top teams in the same conference. LSU did not deserve a rematch against Florida in 2006, Michigan did not deserve a rematch against tOSU in 2006, Alabama did not deserve a rematch against Florida in 2008, Florida did not deserve a rematch against Alabama in 2009 and Alabama did not deserve a rematch against LSU in 2011.

I am not sure they needed to fix the BCS, as its only job was to put 1 v 2 in the BCSNCG. I think they needed to fix the BCS Bowl game selection criteria. As for the selection committee, I like it better as I feel that SOS are flawed as you can skew your SOS number, SMS did it in hoops multiple times in the 2000's. With a playoff we will not find out the best team, we will find out who can win 2 more games.

Playoffs are gay. Way to go guys, lets just make it the NFL where you can lose 9 games yet theoretically still win the Super Bowl.
ETA: What is that, the college football equivalent of 5-7?
Couldn't just leave a decent enough system alone. Just had to go improve it by making it shitty.
fricking THIS. Congrats, retards. Just like the NCAA March Madness started with 16 and went to 68, in 10 years NCAA football will be a watered down 32 team field. Nothing like ruining a kick arse regular season so a bunch of 8-4 teams can demand their right at the playoff table.
Do people really think this solves anything? Now the bitching gets worse, so more and more teams will get included. frick this.

I think you should take the committee and break the committee into 8 specific members whose only job is to watch all games from Conference X and submit detailed reports to each member and maybe release the "notes" each week to help the public determine where each team stands. Use the AP Poll, Harris Poll, ESPN Poll, and some computer form (Sagarin possibly) to find a number. Then have the committee meet at end of thanksgiving weekend. The one thing they need is to have accountability and openness to make this thing work.
Again though, this will not determine the best team, just the one that can win 2 more games.

The pre-bowl BCS top 4 has usually been the top 4 teams in CFB. Why change it?
Committee's SUCK.

SEC,B1G,Big 12 and Pac 12, the ACC is going to need a 0 loss team to even sniff the playoff

Under this standard:
2011: LSU/Stanford, Alabama/Ok. State
2010: Auburn/Wisconsin, Oregon/TCU
2009: Alabama/TCU, Texas/Cincinnati
2008: Oklahoma/Alabama, Florida/Texas
2007: Ohio State/Oklahoma, LSU/Virginia Tech
2006: Ohio State/LSU, Florida/Michigan
2005: USC/Ohio State, Texas/Penn State
2004: USC/Texas, Oklahoma/Auburn
2003: Oklahoma/Michigan, LSU/USC
2002: Miami/USC, Ohio State/Georgia
2001: Miami/Oregon, Colorado/Florida
2000: Oklahoma/Washington, Florida State/Miami
1999: Florida State/Alabama, Virginia Tech/Nebraska
1998: Tennessee/Texas A&M, Florida State/Ohio State
2001 Nebraska had no business being in the BCS title game that year.

If they wanted to choose the one way playoffs could cause more controversy than the BCS, they have done it IMO
Exactly, this isn't going to solve shite. Just create more problems. Now, you might have 1 team with a gripe, but with a 4 team plan, you will have 4-6 teams with a gripe, maybe more.
I think the true genius behind this move, is that a playoff would generate even more discussion. IE: talking about who got left out and did they get it right, is still talking about CFB.

not if they would just follow the fcs format. can't understand why they don't.

Rank the conference champions based on BCS computers. Top 4 seeded in a playoff based off computer rank.
Have each conference pick their method of determining their champion.
Be done with it. Uses objective criteria and computers that will have less bias than a committee or voters to evaluate team resumes.

the problem is that you're basically assuming all conferences are equal OR ignoring the strength of a #2 team from a strong conference

A red herring, 32 teams is 5 weeks, the time doesn't work. To go to 64 in basketball adds 2 weekends.

Me thinks this 4 team format will not stick for long. This is just the 1st step towards a full 6 team playoff. Not sure how many years away it is, but no way does this playoff stick 1ith 4 teams forever. As many have posted before, the BCS formula should still be used and you get your 8 teams as a micx on conference chamops and at large teams.
