Link? No flame.
All I've seen a mention from Wikipedia that also stated he ran a 40 in 4.12 seconds. It is incredibly hard to believe that Cannon was easily faster than Usain Bolt.

I wonder who's better at counterfeiting money.

I've seen that 9.4 sec stat mentioned many times, most recently in that lengthy Espn article on Cannon put out in the last couple of years.

Well thats a cute. Most legends do leave room for exaggeration.
So basically, Billy Cannon was so fast that he could burn Usain Bolt (You know, the only recorded man in history to ever run a 9.58) in the 100, and still have 10 meters left to jog his way to victory?

nice graphic. i'd like to own that in a nice frame

Um. You've got it backwards there, Einstein. 1.0 yard = 0.91 meters.
As for the "ref"....
Follow the link and scroll down to the part about Bill Rogers. That "ref" had much fresher legs than 2-way player Cannon did in the 4th quarter.

The "ref" of course wasn't a ref but a guy who sunk in wearing a referee uniform.

you never knew that wasn't an actual game ref sprinting down the sidelines with Cannon, did you?
Posted on 11/21/12 at 9:26 pm to clamdip
Didn't notice yards. Still, I'll file this one in the same folder as Cannon running a 4.12 in the 40.

OBJ's run was good
Cannon's run was legendary

Thanks for the link and comparison chart. Both against Ole Miss, both 89 yards, both in Tiger Stadium, both were incredible runs and game changers.
But to be honest, Odell's run pales in comparison to Billy's as far as significance. Ole Miss was a helluva team in Cannon's day, with one of the toughest defenses in the country. Cannon's punt return provided the only points for LSU that night.
What is always overlooked in remembering that night however, is that LSU's defense played just as dramatic a role in winning that game as Cannon's punt return did, with an historic goal-line stand stopping Ole Miss on fourth down at the LSU 2 yard line with only 18 seconds left in the game.

Put money on his sub 10 hundred yd dash. Dude played TE in pros. My mom graduated with him.
Here you go dumb freaking doubters.
He would later run the 100 yard dash in 9.4 seconds, and the 40 yard dash in 4.12 seconds. He put a 16-pound shot 54 feet.[2]

As you cite Wikipedia, after telling us a cool story about your mom.
All this after the ultimate logic fail of citing a graphic as absolute proof that one player is bigger, stronger and as fast as the other.

At that time, the players played both offense and defense. Believe LSU had 3 units - White, Go, Chinese Bandits. Something like that.

Well, they happened at different times for sure. Cannon finished his return way way way before Beckham crossed the goal line. Not even close.

Both great in different ways but it is cool to see how they eventually ran along the same route. I also love the key blocks and broken tackles. IT is a really cool graphic i woudl love to see other plays like this.
