I miss the days when a new generation of gpus would be a definate upgrade. The new midrange would match the old high end and the new high end would be far beyond the old one. Isn't that how it used to be? What happened? I feel like I'm going to have to wait multiple generations to justify and upgrade.

So, it still does, to an extent. Traditionally, the XX70 matches the previous XX90. The problem is that the “mid range” now costs $800.

Not really. Even going back to the GTX 6xx and HD 6xxx
