I never got the sense she wouldn't make it. There was zero suspense for me.

Sometimes you just gotta relax and accept a film for what it is. Gravity is a visual spectacle, without all the neener neener neener crap that came along with Avatar.

Again, I saw it in IMAX 3D. It was fun, and that's all I expected of it.

The criteria I listed mean little individually. How many movies have gotten comparable reviews and done as well at the box office and received serious Best Picture consideration? There aren’t many.

I don't believe your number for lowest drop is accurate considering some movies have actually had an increase from first weekend to next and that's not jut limited releases going to wide releases.

Does a movie have to be re-watchable to be considered best of all-time?

That would be a good topic for discussion. I say yes, but others might disagree.

Re-watchable is a factor in rating a movie but obviously one of many considerations. A reasonable example might be Lawrence of Arabia. I have probably watched the entire movie only a couple of times but Peter O'Toole's performance as T.E. Lawrence is easily one of the best of all time.

partially because of you tater heads in this thread I was dead set against seeing this movie. My kid really wanted to go so we went today. For all those that say it's not rewatchable, think about this: did she really float away and die or did she get rescued from floating away? It changes the way you think about the entire movie and Bullock's character.

Back to the lurk zone.

I know for a fact that this isn't true. Avatar opened to over $70 million and dropped less than 2% in its second week. Go to Boxofficemojo if you don't believe me.

All 3 Toy Story movies for starters.

Man, I'd sure like to go check this out with the family today, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this movie will make me go out like a bitch (i.e. allow a tear or two to escape mine eye).

Absolutely not.
Agree

Very few movies have "rewatchability" to me.

None that require $10 per viewing.

I didn't enjoy the ending, I felt like it would have been a better movie if the ending was different.

I haven't read this thread, but wanted to say that I saw Gravity over the weekend and thought it was fantastic. The cinematography (obviously) was gorgeous, the story was great (even if simplified and "reality" was stretched a bit), the actors both did a fine job (never got the hate that's been going on for months prior to its release), etc. Great movie. And I definitely will be watching it on my 65" plasma once it comes out on DVD...and I wouldn't mind seeing it again in theaters actually.

This, all of it.

Gravity was damn near perfection. It didn't try to do too much like many big budget films do. It kept it very simple and made me feel SOMETHING, which is the most important aspect of a film IMO. I will see it again and hopefully with a friend that hasn't seen it before.

I don't feel that at all. While 2001 was about humanity and its dependence on tools, I'd say that Gravity is about life and its struggle to survive and eventually adapt. Without that final scene, I don't think it would have come off as well.

Finally caught Gravity last night on Imax 3D and really enjoyed it. It was beautiful and rejuvenated my childhood dream of going to space. It made me remember how I felt when I went to the Smithsonian.

Some of it felt pushed, like Bullock talking to her kid and Matt as she "ene meany miny mo" the buttons, but overall I thought it was ok as far as character and acting.

Probably wouldn't go see it again, but will definitely check it out on my 60" 3D in Blu Ray.
