Had anybody mentioned rabbit & dumplings? It was a staple at my house when I was a kid and my dad had beagles.
Quick side note, the old man had a car and not a truck for a while and would carry the dogs in the trunk. No bullshite.

It's amazing how certain childhood memories stick with you as you get older.
When I was maybe 12, my great uncle and I went hunting, unsuccessfully. On the way back home, the car in front of us hit a rabbit - my uncle promptly stopped and picked it up. Then he went into the woods and came out with an armful of mushrooms.
Smothered the rabbit with plenty of onions, mushrooms, and red wine. That was one of the best meals I've ever had.

If they were shot (wild, not farm raised) be careful with the pellets so you don't break a tooth.
Also, if you carry beagles in a car trunk when hunting don't put a sling blade in the trunk. A dog can cut the pad on its paw and make a pretty bloody mess!
