I was talking to my wifes cousin during Thanksgiving dinner and he says Cheyenne Bottoms in Kansas is a magical place.

He works up there quite a bit and has hunted it the past few years. DIY public hunt, but from what it sounds like, its a far cry from Louisiana public land adventures. You can walk in or use a boat.

They have ponds where they constantly regulate the water level to keep it desirable for waterfowl.

I was just wondering if any of you have hunted there, and if it would be a realistic decision vs. going with an outfitter.

I have deer hunted around Coldwater, Ks for the last 10 years and have heard a lot about Cheyenne Bottoms. I would go with a guide if you are going to drive all the way up there. There is more hunting pressure that you would think.

I would go with you if you decide. I'm stationed with a guy and we have been talking about doing this. It would cut the costs with 3 people

Apparently there's tons of pressure because there's so few places to hunt in Kansas. Quality birds but I think I'd go somewhere with a guide up there

Sounds about right, I have heard that Cheyenne has gained traction over the past few years, increasing the pressure.

JenarBoy and I are talking about making a public trip next season. Kansas, Oklahoma, etc.

Any insight for any area appreciated.

Not opposed to Oklahoma either (I need to get with The Last Coco on that) but I just dont know off hand if Oklahoma has a unicorn land such as Cheyenne Bottoms.

Im too poor right now to get a guided trip, my ole lady is about to drop another pup in a week

I did a ton of research on Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira this past summer and made a contract near Gread Bend. He hunts both areas and offered to take us out and show us the area.

We weren't able to make the trip because of other obligations but we felt like if we paid attention to the weather and made the trip at the right time, we would have been successful.

An OB duck hunting weekend next year is certainly doable. Hopefully we get colder weather sooner next season so the mallards show up before January. Either way, we will almost certainly have birds.

You may check out Flint Hills NWR, Redding and Malvern wildlife areas near Emporia too. We were going to hunt afternoons there, but it was 100% locked up in ice. Our guide also said it is heavily pressured. Weather will be the biggest factor, I believe.
ETA: There are a couple of DIY farms that can be leased for about $100 per day after deer season closes.
