honestly, is the empire really all that bad? going back to harry plinkett's point, if you were a regular guy, the rise and fall of the empire probably didnt' even fricking matter. you didn't need to enlist, the economy is kicking arse, everything still looks pristine. for some reason, I'm able to separate each movie as its own. so even though jedi isn't as good it doesn't ruin empire, or star wars, the prequels don't frick the OT so long as I have some avenue to watch the theatrical versions.
also if I was Luke and my Dad was Vader and he said "Join me and we will rule the galaxy as father and son" I would of jumped on that opportunity. I mean you only live once. Being Caser or Napoleon would be a fun ride until you get executed or exiled.

prequels...where's the anti freeze?
I think what makes the prequels worse for me is that I sat in front of a theater for hours to go see it on opening day.
Then it sucked that bad.
Jar Jar pisses me off but so did that Frog looking leader guy.
How you can have the best trilogy of all time and follow it up with that.
If Lucas were behind the new movies I wouldn't even be interested.
What Abrams did to Star Trek would be awesome in this universe.

jar jar is so misunderstood. he's so hated because he's the only thing in the prequels that makes any god damn sense. he's the only character who stays in character or has any kind of life to him.
I'm not saying I like him, but he isn't in the top 5 of things that ruined phantom menace. he didn't help. a toned down version of him would've been exactly what George envisioned.

I'm a trekkie, I still fail to see how how J.J Abrams ruined it. It gave us updated people and was actually good. There was subtle nuances of the Star Trek universe all through the movie...
I really am happy that J.J is on Star Wars. We will get actors that can act the roles and not look it for one. We will get actors number 2. The lead will actually more more expressive.
Remember this line? : "When I am apart from you, my heart Hurt."
or this: "You will certainly try."
And base on the light saber in action that we seen so far, it actually being swung like a heavy blunt weapon instead of fancy fencer sticks that dance to a badly choreographed dance.
I remember, IN episode 1 2 3 where the Obi Wan just held the light saber there, and his attack hit it three time instead of coming in from another angle. You could tell they waited for the attack to land before moving onto the next set.
I think the black guy is the main character, and the force wielder. The girl is red herring I bet.

I'm sure they all jacked each other off at what they thought was a clever way to simply regurgitate old plots and characters without having to think of anything original, but what we got was a huge turd gumbo.
I'm a trekkie, I still fail to see how how J.J Abrams ruined it.
It was super edgy, though. So edgy.

quote:I hate Star Trek. It's boring. However, I loved the new movies. What Abrams needs to do with Star Wars is much different than what he did with Star Trek. He needs to get back to the source material, not update it like he did with Star Trek. From what I've seen so far, he understands this.

Way over the top contrarian post. I know you don't believe that load of bunk.
Jar Jar was terrible. Really, really bad. How he moved, how he spoke, how he called Darth fricking Vader a girls name.
Take it back Fox. Take it all back.

soooo...funny joke...some trekkie fans were talking in a Star Wars thread...

I assume you're new to Star Wars, otherwise you'd know the answer. Because that's how they always worked

But the accuracy of the light saber battles is not going to make or break it for me. I was just arguing against what the other poster seemed to suggest - that the slower saber fighting was more realistic.

Speaking of the Phantom Menace: Can someone tell me who the protagonist was?
K thx
K thx

Yeah the fights in TESB and ROTJ are DEFINITELY less realistic than this
P.S. trying to rationalize the tech in Star Wars is dumb. It's not sci fi like Star Trek and explaining how any of the technology works is not something it does or has ever done. The precedent was set in the originals that lightsabers handled essentially like broadswords, and then Lucas shite all over that precedent because shiny and fast is cool to 12 year olds.

quote:Not what I was trying to do. I was playing devil's advocate, but to argue that it should be a certain way because of "precedent" is equally dumb. The saber fights in 1-3 were not among my many problems with those movies.

The saber with hilt, however, is definitely cause for concern. Hopefully, the movie is not full of gimmicks like that.

He sucks, but who doesn't. Nobody complains about qui gonn, and he's the a-hole who completely and utterly ruined Star Wars
I believe everything I said. Har jar sucks, but the hate isn't comensurate with his suckage

The phantom menace would've been an exceptional fight if there was something going on between the 3
Excellent score (duel of the fates)
Good setting
Good choreography
I don't mind that it's fast because mail is fighting 2 people with a double blade. But it's just shiny lights for the geeks

Dullest character in 6 movies IMO.

One of the worst things Abrams can do with Episode 7 is to discount or ignore the prequel trilogy, and it sometimes feels like they're trying to hard to do that. Even if the movies weren't the best, those events happened and they happened the way that they were portrayed in the films.
The philosophy behind the lightsaber duels changed even during the original trilogy (see A New Hope vs Empire Strikes Back), but there's a story-based explanation for this.
The lightsaber fights in the original trilogy were the way they were because the only lightsaber wielding jedi/sith left in the galaxy was an old hermit, a self-taught kid, and a giant machine man.
Episodes 1-3 represented lightsaber battles betweened fully trained Jedi/Sith in their prime.
If we revert back to original trilogy era hacking and slashing, I at least hope there's an explanation provided even if it's just more or less Luke never had time to train.
Also, not every fight in the original trilogy is ridiculous. Here are some good ones aren't as over the top:

I'm sorry, I don't think I was as clear as I could be. I don't mean to say that hack and slash or fancy maneuvers were my problem with the light saber. It just that base on the scene where the saber swung from the bad guy seem to have...
Like you FEEL that the sith guy want to really maim whoever he was going to strike. The prequels, while flashy and fun, felt more like ."tap tap tap tap opps too slow." And they get stabbed and died.
Now this in itself is not a problem. But Lucas hired the people to look the part not being able to act it. So some real fluidity in their fighting would be great to see.
They can do fast past fighting like Martial arts movies, just make sure they sell every strikes and blow being delivered is all.
AS for the star trek comment. It's not even about being edgy. It was a good flick, the time travel is classic trek. If you are a trek fan you know they use that plot device over and over again.
There The Voyage Home, First Contact, All through the series, and you get offended that they doing it for the updated Star Trek?
Really?
It gave me a sense of the Federation as a real entity and not just some obscure government. It also introduced more aliens then I ever recalling seeing on a trek film that weren't part of the cast. It made all of their interaction seem normal as if they always been there. Only DS9 ever gave me that feeling.
Now the second one , that made little sense, but you realize in the second movie, not a single phaser shot was fired from the Enterprise? That one was all about interpersonal relationship right there. A Trek trait.
I think people just hate on the new trek film just because they hate it.
Although I do look foward to the Fast and Furious Franchise guy heading Star Trek. I look forward to a lot of dancing Orion who happen to look hispanic and Vin Disel as Cap'n kirk
Anyway, the fast light saber fight felt more real in the clone war animated series than the real movie and this is suppose to be THE source material.
