Any thoughts on Georgia OLB Leonard Floyd?

He's a guy to keep an eye on in round 1 if the Saints want to gamble that a good DT will be available in round 2. I'm not sure how he'd do in coverage, but he can get after the QB.
Leonard Floyd draft profile
Fyi, fwiw Kiper has Floyd going #17 to Atlanta in his recent mock.
quote:
STRENGTHS Unique combination of length and athleticism. Extremely rangy with great chase speed from sideline to sideline. Good change of direction for taller player. Long limbs and twitch to spring into a tackle from a mile away. If unblocked, will chase down line of scrimmage from backside and foil run plans. Elusive in open space dodging blockers and sifting through traffic in pursuit of the ball. Has the traits to be highly effective in man coverage. As an edge rusher, able to shoot out of the starting blocks and cover substantial ground with long second and third strides. Not a great bender, but has ankle flexion necessary to lean at 45-degree angle and buzz inside the rush arc. Substantial pass rush potential with a variety of options to the quarterback. Pet move is upfield burst followed by jump-cut inside tied with inside club. Able to dip and rip around the corner. Dangerous on T/E twists and blitzes underneath. Able to worm his way through the A-gap as standup blitzer.

I think he is very one dimensional, and i'm not sure he can consistently beat NFL tackles. Will be a rotational player IMO. Pass.

Fix the DL, then worry about LB/DB. Our back 7,8 isn't going to do shite until we pack a punch in the trenches. I'm completely in favor of our first two rounders going to the DL.

I'd rather draft one, sign one at LB and DL. We suddenly have a little money to spend anyway.

Do we need another LB'er who can't cover?
We seem to have plenty of one dimensional LB'ers.

If we were juuuust a bit higher in the draft we could get a 3D Lb'er we need so badly.

Combine is big. Vic Beasley showing up with 20+lbs of muscle helped him out tremendously.
Interesting to see if Floyd can do something similar.

Couldn't agree more, watched a lot of Georgia at times he plays like a freak and other times he disappears. I don't like taking him 12, if we were 18-22 I would love it

Love it at 18, hate it at 12...man, you're good at this

I was all for this guy at one point. But no way I would take him in the early-mid first. He's very Dion Jordan-esque. Tall, lanky, one dimensional. I don't think he's anywhere near our radar, we have much better options for what we need that will be available come time to make the pick.

Let's take a gander at the weaknesses and conclusion too.
So a sub-package 1st round pick? I'd rather the Saints move away from "Let's wait and see how they develop types" in the higher rounds.
Also, that scouting report reminds me of a proto-type size cornerback who just needed to hone his coverage ability. I think we all remember that guy.
quote:
WEAKNESSES All thin everything. Gangly frame produces marginal play strength. Built like a wide receiver and needs to live in a team cafeteria and weight room. Not an edge-setter. Gets long arms into defender effectively, but struggles to gain extension. Loses fight for neutral zone at point of attack. Issues shedding blocks forces him into downfield tackler rather than backfield playmaker. Drag-down tackler with little pop behind pads as a hitter. Must work to keep pad level lower on inside rush move.
quote:
BOTTOM LINE Floyd is painfully thin and will struggle to matchup with the strength of NFL players, but he is rangy in space, plays with a good motor and has traits as a pass rusher that would be a mistake to ignore. Floyd’s ability to cover close to five yards in three strides is rare for edge rushers. Add to that his inside counter and ability to play in space and you have a prospect who will be heavily scrutinized. Floyd’s lack of functionality could limit him to sub-packages unless he proves he can add more beef to his frame.

Not too much on my radar cuz #12 looks too high to pick him but he should be gone by #47

Figured most of you guys would remember him destroying LSU a few years ago. The guy definitely takes some plays off though, I wouldn't take him in the first round.

He looks like a clone of Barkevious Mingo

Pass. More protypical 3-4 standup edge guy. Not versatile enough on DL imo.
