Calling any Dentists on this board.....

So, my wisdom tooth (actually the gums around it) is infected. (pericoronitis)
I am on a round of antibiotics I started yesterday and I am doing a rinse once a day too. However, my dentists wants to pull the tooth out today. Everything I've read online points to the dentist or surgeon should wait until the infection is cleared so they don't spread the infection or cause sepsis.
Should I wait? Or is my dentist right in wanting to remove it right away? I just dont' trust these guys trying to make a quick buck.

Did you have a tooth growing behind another tooth as a kid?

Tie it to an arrow and let it fly

I mean he'll get paid whether he removes it today or in a week, so I don't believe it would be motivated by money.

DO NOT DO IT! Have you seen the rain. Stay indoors.

If he's been taking gambling advice from Peej he may have a need for the money sooner rather than later...

But you trust all of the jackasses on an internet message board?

Not a dentist but had this done 3 times. Just as long as you are on an antibiotic 24 hours in advance is the protocal. You will be fine!

FWIW my Mom told me the other day she had to get a tooth pulled but the dentist would not do it until the infection went away.

Also, they "prefer" to do things like this before Fridays. If you have any issues tomorrow, they will be in the office on Friday to see you with the weekend approaching.

One factor in the decision is if you are elderly and/or immuno compromised. So if you have the AIDS that could factor into the decision.
Because even a minor infection can be a serious issue for certain segments of the population. If you are a healthy young adult, they will be more willing to extract the tooth now versus waiting out the infection.*
*Not a dentist but am medically trained.

my antidotal evidence is that I got mine pulled under the same circumstances and the infection lasted much longer and I got pretty sick

Nope, the fix is to get that tooth out.

I make my patients wait 48 hrs after starting the antibiotic. Sometimes after you start the antibiotics there is a flare up in the infection that may warrant a trip to the emergency room (probably <2%). If this is gonna happen it usually happens during the 24-36hr mark and I don't want you to have to deal with the flare up and a fresh extraction site at the same time.
Granted I am speaking in general, I have no clue the peculiarities of your mouth, nor the size and location of your infection, which could change everything. Hope y'all figure it out.

This is the opposite of true.

thanks. It's the bottom right wisdom tooth. Definitely pericoronitis. Been hurting for 3 days now. Started antibiotics yesterday evening.

I leave it up to my patient. Most want to wait for the infection to clear up first before extracting. The main factor is an infection makes it harder for the local anesthetic to work fully. So there is the potential that your dentist may not be able to get you completely numb. The other factor is your pain level. Some patients are in so much pain, they just want the damn thing out no matter what. If you chose to take the antibiotic, be prepared to wait 2-3 days for the symptoms to subside unless you call your DDS and ask for a Medrol Dose Pack to take in addition to the antibiotic. This will decrease the swelling and inflammation much more quickly.
