A close friend of mine (good guy) passed away the other day, and I went to his memorial service yesterday. Since he had been sick for a while and knew what was coming, he had already taken care of his arrangements and chose to be cremated. At the service, his sister and her two grown children were telling anyone who would listen that "he was going to hell" for being cremated. It really pissed me off and I wanted to say something, but I bit my tongue and resisted the urge so as to not make even more of a scene. I feel a believer's salvation is between him and God. I must admit I have never heard of the idea that cremation would send someone to hell. Has anyone else heard of this belief or had a similar experience?
Very few things piss me off more than jackasses feeling the need to shite on the wishes of someone who's died. Happened with me in regards to cremation 14 years ago this month when my dad died. For years and years he had told me and my sisters what he wanted whenever he died...to be cremated and have his ashes scattered near this little fishing hole we used to go to and have such a good time at. I mean...not what I'd have wanted if it were me, but there's zero question it was what he wanted.
So...time comes and he dies and we have his body cremated. Next thing you know, his long time girlfriend (like 20+ years long...they got together after my mom died when I was really young) decides she needs to step in and tell us what we ought to be doing. Within a week or so it's nearly her entirely family hounding me, even so far as doing it at the memorial service I acquiesced to even though he said he hadn't wanted one. I actually had her brother in law tell me, "You know...we do these things for the living not the dead." The irony is that they're all religious...so in their minds he could literally see them fricking with me AND the plans he had wanted me to carry out and they gave zero fricks. And I, who was under no impression that he existed outside my own memories, was more concerned with doing what he wanted.
Seriously...frick people like that. The greatest thing you can do, I think, is honor your friend/family member by granting their last wish regardless of whether or not they'll ever know if you did or not.

My friend was a christian, so no. That would have been extremely disrespectful.

it is not the preferred method in the eyes of the church

Could not agree with you more.

Although accepted, cremains continued to be banned from the church
I think they can be allowed now...
from USCCB:
quote:
In April 1997, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments granted an indult for the United States to allow the diocesan bishop to permit the presence of the cremated remains of a body at a Funeral Mass. Later that year, the Congregation confirmed the special texts and ritual directives (Prot. n. 1589/96/L for both indult and texts), which were then published as an appendix to the Order of Christian Funerals. Frequently the Secretariat of Divine Worship receives requests for clarification or suggestions for best practices regarding the presence of cremated remains and funerals and their appropriate final disposition or committal.

are they baptist? Catholic Church has no issues with cremation if that is the only method that can be afforded.
My friend was a member of a baptist church.

The Southern Baptist Church has no problem with cremation, but sadly some members are uninformed regarding the Bible.
In Georgia a body MUST be embalmed before cremation according to law.
Funeral Homes buying State Legislators.

I've made my wishes clear.
When I die, cremate me, find the finest woman that is willing or can be bought, mix my ashes with water in a douche bottle, and run me through one more time.

Not true. No States require embalming at all times and only some require it under certain circumstances. It's a widely held belief but not accurate.
ETA even in Georgia, I just checked. I'd link but I'm on my phone, there's a government webpage telling you to avoid scammers who claim it's required by law.

Baptist theologian Albert Mohler doesn't say people are going to hell for it, but he does call it a pagan practice and a loosening of traditional Christian ties. LINK It wouldn't surprise me that the hardcore fundamentlists would take an even harsher stand. I've heard some Catholic leaders speak against it also.

No bodies require embalming according to Louisiana law (RS37:848), they only require embalming OR refrigeration if they aren't buried or cremated in 30 hours. And nearly every morgue has the ability to refrigerate a body.
How about a fun fact alert next time.
Seriously, that's pretty interesting stuff. Shame that funeral homes treat families like they're buying a used car.

Yeah it's pretty disgusting and should be criminal. I think it's like a 250$ charge for the guys in suits to shake hands of people on the way in and say "sorry for your loss". frick those people.

This is why I'm a proponent of the Catholic Church. They at least use intellect and thought and have historical research behind their reasoning whether you agree with it or not.
The reason the church was against it for many years was that cremation and spreading of the ashes were used by the pagans. The early church chose to keep the Jewish tradition of burial since many if not most in the early church were Jewish converts. This tradition was upheld when many saints and church leaders were burned alive and had their ashes spread as a sign of contempt to Christians and mocking of the resurrection.
The church now allows cremation but prefers the ashes not be shown disrespect by spreading those ashes.

They should go to church. The Catholic church has allowed cremation for several years now
While that may be true, the Catholic Church doesn't decide who goes to heaven.

That's crazier than anything those Muslims believe, IMO.

Ahsman to ashman. Dustman to dustman.
They do chop you up before they burn you with the leftovers bits from others.
But whatever.

I donno. I want to be shot out of a circus cannon or parachute with a bag of silverwear or rocket skates. Keep em guessing afterwards.
