Honestly, I had a ceremony like this in 1968 when I "graduated" from Kindergarten. It's a minor occasion that happens once.

If you're worried about the "hey look at me" stuff, look at the almost pathological need we seem to have to put on a pageant for our kids every birthday. And because everyone seems to do it, people feel guilted into continuing to do it. All the while, Chuck E Cheese is making out like a bandits and the kids start to feel as though the anniversary of their birth is akin to a holy day of obligation for all their friends and family.
