I have a masterbilt 40 and love it. Does it smoke foods like a traditional offset smoker? No ,but about everything I have made on it has turned out great: brisket, pork butt, ribs etc. you don't get the traditional smoke ring color in your meet but everyone I feed says it is delicious.

Don't waste your time with an electric. Get a pit barrel cooker.

This. I have been through two electronic smokers, all end up failing due to cheap electronic components. Never have any issues with my pit barrel and everything I cook with it comes out perfect

I'd consider a pellet smoker.

I have a Weber Smokey Mountain and it's pretty great.

I have the Masterbuilt. I love it SO much. Set the temp, set the time, fill water pan, add wood and meat, then forget about it until the timer goes off.

I put a pork butt on when I go to bed, then when I wake up it is ready to eat. Fabulous.

Go with a pellet smoker. I used masterbuilts for awhile with the amnps and have a smokin it(clone of cookshack.). They just can't beat a good pellet smoker and it's just as easy.

I have a masterbuilt and i seem to oversmoke my stuff. How often do you add chips for ribs? Pork butt? Brisket?

I only add chips once and I keep the top vent almost all the way closed. If still too much, add less chips. Be careful with mesquite because it can get REALLY strong. If I want mesquite, I'll use a very small piece mixed in with some pecan. Experiment with it and keep a log of what you did. That way you'll know what you like best. I really love mine and cannot say enough good things about it.

Masterbuilt works great.

Cleaning it is challenging. I cheat by turning it upside down and spraying it with oven cleaner and rinsing it out.

Try covering the bottom slide out tray with foil , all you should have to clean are the racks and the drip pan .....

In other words, the warning about not covering the grates or anything else with tin foil isn't a hard and fast rule I should pay attention to? I don't want to blow my patio up...
