Not a troll... serious question.
What amount would put this issue to rest?

Yes, this is the exact same thing slaves had to go through. The same exact thing.
You do realize that the Scotch-Irish were the first slaves in the new world?
The only reason that the American settlers began to turn to the east Indian and African slave traders as opposed to the free trade was because of how many of the white slaves were dying to the environment and treatment they were receiving. Even in the 1800s and early 1900s Irish sharecroppers worked alongside Africans, part of the reasoning for landowners only being allowed to vote was to shun away the Irish who were most often sharecroppers or roamed for work in rented places or in ghettos. While the plight of the Irish in America did not extend for as long or encompass as a great a number as what many African Americans saw, dismissing it and not also looking at how far back their treatment by other Europeans as bastards or beneath them even prior to their enslavement in the New World is a narrow view of the world to take. As someone who's bloodline is predominantly Native American and Irish I can certainly have compassion for what your ancestors had to go through, but dismissing what mine went through because you choose to be blind to it will definitely cause my compassion to waver greatly.

Nah baw. Only blacks have been discriminated against in Merica.

The overwhelming majority of people in this country find the idea of reparations to be ludicrous, especially considering the number of impoverished European immigrants who came to this country after slavery was abolished and yet managed to pull themselves out of poverty within 2 or 3 generations.
This, damn it.
The British selling Irish "indentured servants" to America is exactly how my father's side of the family arrived here.
My maternal great grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee Indian.
Where the frick is MY check at?! Where is MY free education?! I could've reached into the government's pockets and received free money if I'd so chosen. After all, I qualify due to my Cherokee ancestry...but I didn't. And I won't. Why? Because the hell Cherokee Indians (as well as Irish slaves) went thru was never MY fight. I didn't suffer...my ancestors did. And it is shameful and disgusting to even consider capitalizing on their pain..on the sacrifices they made..in order to make a fast and easy buck for myself.
ETA: Save yourself the time and energy, Strong Safety..don't respond to ANYTHING I might post bc I will not reply to your race baiting tactics.

You missed crack cocaine, the industrial prison complex and a horde of other racist people that used institutions legally gutted of explicitly racist policies to institute implicitly racist policies.
That's been the last 50+ years.
Y'all act as if racist stopped being racist and started following the law in 1964. That's just a morally incomprehensble falsehood.
Fake news!
Sad!
No, I didn't miss that. Racism exists and it's bad. It exists with all peoples, white, black, Asian. So how would you go about putting a monetary figure on that? If institutional racism exists and is a product of white people, for the purpose of bettering white people, then why is it that Asian households have the highest median income of all the races in America?

Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed 9 years before our current president got sued by his current employers legal department for instituting racist housing policies.
Yeah sure racist stopped being racist because if a law --- a law they vehemently hated and thus instituted the southern strategy

quote:I gives a frick about your compassion, homie. It does me no good. The topic wasn't even about the Irish, but as usual they are brought up to downplay blacks and basically saying, "well it wasn't that bad, the Irish did it too for a while." To try and closely compare the two situations is lame and childish as frick, but it is what is expected and accepted here on the OT. You compassion means shite if you aren't backing it with volunteering of your time and giving a helping hand. As a native, your people have been compensated for the horrors they have endured, but you know as descendant of Irish that what they endured and what blacks endured are nowhere close to being the same and trying to act like it is is pretty fricking insulting.

What's the purpose though? Is it to level the playing field? To right the wrongs of slavery? To help get black people out of poverty? Or just to serve as a handout?

If you feel so strongly about this, then compensate them out of your own pocket.
Then maybe others will follow your example.
And everyone will be happy! The ones who feel as you do can donate and the rest of the population won't have to donate.
This is a win-win for everyone!

You have been impacted absolutely 0% because your great, great, great, great grandpa was a slave. You realize slave owners were fricking rich to begin with right? That's how they could afford to buy slaves. Jeezus H when will this fricking nonsense stop?

SS you know good and damn well that's a stretch. His dad's company which he worked at was sued because some of the 40 properties had superintendents that were attempting to undermine federal law and were not willing to rent to minorities including telling them there were no openings when there in fact were. Does the federal government open a case against the super making 20k a year (maybe) or do they go after the millionaire and his family who own it?

You're not the natives. And that monetary figure and any compensation has been virtually meaningless. Natives live in horrible conditions.
From the beginning, I said this was just another money grab which served no real purpose. You're not making a case that it's anything different.
