You won't see the primary pan because the primary pan is inside of the unit, attached to the coil inside of the AC. The PVC you see coming out of the unit is your primary drain.
Then below the unit there is the pan that you can see; that is the overflow pan. The overflow pan should (but doesn't always!) have a PVC line coming out of it (it might just have a cap), which is the one I've been assuming you're vacuuming?
