Still a defensive slugfest. LSU clinging to a 7 point lead with 2:00 to play. LSU scrum around the 50m line. Still 17-10.

Despite numerous handling errors and stout opposition LSU holds on to defeat the Aggies.

LSU played ferocious defense throughout the match and made tackle after tackle to keep the Aggies at bay. A key play in the match was an open field tackle and poach by LSU’s 8-man a meter out from the line under the posts. That tackle turned out to be the difference in the score. LSU lead the entire way but it was a match that both teams will be looking improve upon. A&M will get another shot at the Tigers in 2 weeks when LSU travels to College

A beat up and bruised Tiger team will be traveling to Austin to take on Texas next weekend.

Brief Conference Rundown
FloRugby has a short summary about the Red River Conference matches this past weekend. Here’s the LSU/ Red River South write up.

quote:

Meanwhile, the South was thrown for a loop when LSU beat Texas A&M 17-10. Brennan Falcon, John Ruocco, and Aidan Elias scored tries to stake the Tigers to a 17-5 first-half lead, and they held on from there. The Aggies drop to 4-1 as a result and LSU is now 3-0. However, a previously cancelled game against Texas is now slated for a crucial makeup game on Feb. 24.

The Longhorns beat Houston 43-14 and sit 4-1, just a couple of standings points behind A&M. Next week’s LSU at Texas game could be a Red River South decider.

My next update will come when FloRugby releases their weekly rankings. LSU should expect a hefty bump up from #27 after taking care of #19 Texas A&M.

Well, it looks like LSU did not get near the rankings boost as I expected. The Tigers only jumped 2 spots to #25.

Here are the current FloRugby D1 Rankings.
FloRugby Top 40

And the D1A Recap
quote:

Red River conference play continued with one surprise as Oklahoma handed Baylor its first loss of the season, winning 40-29. In Lubbock Texas, Arkansas defeated Texas Tech 59-30. The race to the top of Red River South got a little more interesting with LSU knocking off Texas A&M 17-10. Texas beat Houston to stay in the mix in the South, so now Texas and Texas A&M sit at 4-1 while LSU is 3-0.

The only teams they jumped were fellow conference foes that lost, A&M and Baylor. This cements the likelihood that the Red River will only have one team make the playoff again this year. LSU is still essentially atop the Red River as the lone team undefeated in conference and highest rank at #25. However, the margin is slim this year with Texas A&M and Baylor sitting at #26 and #27 respectively.

Baylor has already clinched the Red River North and will play the South champion which is boiling down to LSU, A&M, and sleeper Texas. LSU can knock Texas out of the race with a win in Austin this upcoming weekend.

This is a potential trap game for the Tigers with a rematch against a fierce Aggie team coming up the following week. UT is currently sitting at 4-1 with their lone loss coming against A&M back in November. Hopefully LSU will be able to take care of business and retain their unblemished record.

eta: This ranking is FloRugby's D1A Rankings which ranks their top 40 teams that play in college rugby's highest division, D1A.

Aaaand, one last informative post from me today.

LSU's match against Texas A&M on March 3rd has been moved from College Station and will be played in Houston.

This match will serve as the opening act for the Houston Sabercats professional match against the Ontario Arrows. This should be an amazing chance at exposure for both teams as Sabercat matches have been averaging 2500+ attendance in their infant season. Houston plays in Constellation Stadium in Sugar Land, TX which is also home to the Sugarland Skeeters minor league baseball team.

Here is the Facebook event from LSU Rugby.
LSU Rugby vs Texas A&M - Curtain Raiser for Houston Sabercats

Any alum or Tiger fans in the area that weekend feel free to come out and cheer on the Tigers as they'll look to cement their throne as the class of the Red River Conference.

Quick update. LSU defeats Texas 63-29 in Austin. A big win for the Tigers as they stay undefeated in conference play and knock UT out of the race for the Red River South. This moves LSU into the drivers seat and they should be able to virtually clinch the RRRC South next week win a win over A&M in Houston.

If anyone has a premier sports channel package they should be able to catch a filmed replay of the game against Texas on Eleven Sports, Sunday at 10PM.

Congrats.

Who ended up reffing? I ended up AR-ing for the San Antonio-West Houston match and then ran the Trinity U scrimmage against San Antonio's D3 team.

Not sure who reffed. I get most of my info from Coach Red and he stayed home and let Coach Scott take care of things. Saw the score on facebook.

LSU Rugby is gearing up for the biggest match of the year. The Tigers will face Texas A&M this Saturday outside of Houston at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, TX. This match will serve as the opening match before the Houston Sabercats, Houston's professional team, matches the Ontario Arrows.

This match is extremely important for the Red River South conference standings. The winner will virtually clinch the South and set up a matchup with Baylor for the Red River Championship. I can't stress enough how much the Tigers are itching to get revenge for last seasons upset at the hands of the Bears.

Here is the FloRugby recap from last week relevant to LSU.
quote:

Red River South Wing Ruben Mikeska scored two early tries as Texas A&M rolled over Houston 44-10 on Saturday to move to 4-1. Meanwhile, LSU put on an impressive performance a week after beating A&M, taking down Texas 63-29. Lock Dylan Stephens and wing Aidan Elias both scored twice and Brennan Falcon was a monster at No. 8, getting player-of-the-game honors. Robert Hughes scored two for UT, but LSU's points haul has put everyone on notice. The Tigers needed to play this game after the fixture with Texas was called off due to snow, forcing a rescheduling of class in Baton Rouge, LA. Missing the game would have meant missing out on points in the standings. Now it all comes down to this coming Saturday's meeting with A&M to decide who is the likely Red River South winner.

And their updated Rankings with LSU sliding up a spot to #24 after a 63-29 win over Texas.

I didn't make it either, from LSU Rugby Facebook. "After a hard fought match LSU Rugby falls to Texas A&M 29-14. LSU looks to rebound next week in a Conference home match against the University of Houston. Bulawayo!"
