what was available at pick 27 that would have been a sure fire starter?

false dilemma

also, it ignores the fact that Davenport is far from a "sure fire starter" and he cost a LOT more than 27 would have in isolation

However, there is a window to play with an elite qb, and this short time frame must be taken advantage of.

so you agree if he's not a major contributor next year this is a disaster and we paid way too much

Right on bilj

I look at Davenport as best case scenario, he’s Aldon Smith(on the field), worst case he puts on 20 lbs and is Calais Campbell, playing inside and out. I see very little bust potential

And I don’t buy the raw/project narrative. That’s what people say about guys who come from CUSA type schools. He may not be Reggie White technique wise, but he isn’t a blank slate either.

I'm a fan of the pick if Davenport pans out, but Will Hernandez would be a day one starter at guard or given valuable depth to a position that is pivotal to our team.

I thought we were trading up for Derwin James or Tremaine Edmunds.

If Davenport was coming onto a weaker defense/DL, there would be slight concern...but this defense is pretty stacked across the board. Still need a little help at LB but the DL is deep.

Kelemete played in every game last year, yet was technically a backup. So he would add valuable depth to a really thin position for the Saints with Kelemete gone

So we should have taken a back lineman instead of a very likely impact day 1 starter? I would like to see better oline depth, but come on.

Better OL depth? Currently we have zero OL depth with Kelemete and Strief gone

Yeah at this point unless we sign Austin Howard and draft an iOL today I'm nervous about OL

plenty of mid rounders to secure depth there

you're not getting an elite rusher in the mid rounds or the odds are severely against it

like i said last night, there are going to be lots of goalposts moving over this year

Not from me, I've said it all along. The draft is for acquiring talent not having a Hall of Famer right out of the gate.

If he takes time to develop, and DOES develop, then its irrelevant.

I agree. What do you know? You may very well be right but I feel like the front office deserves the benefit of the doubt. We won't know until the end of the season. I am never crazy about giving up a 1st round pick but go look at reactions to last year's draft after the draft and compare to reactions of the same draft picks after the season ended.

i don't dislike the prospect. if we had been at 14-15 organically and had him fall to us i'd be super excited it's the cost and requirement of immediate, elite impact. it's just not even fair for the kid

Agree with all of this

Let’s just see what happens. It’s a pretty big risk, but the FO has earned some slack with their moves the past 2-3 years.

We still have picks 3-5 this year. That’s exactly where you get a Senio Kelemete plug and play O-Line depth pick, that’s where you find a decent slot receiver or developable TE, and that’s right where you find a rotational DT or a project in the secondary.

still disagree that his impact next year has to be "elite" to justify the cost

also as DBG may have said earlier, I like that we're no longer depending on bill johnson to aid in his development
