I test drove a WRX when i was car shopping and it was pretty awesome. But I don't really know if it's an outdoorsy car per se.
Ended up with a new Crosstrek and I love it.
ETA: I live in California, where there are actual mountains and snow that necessitates all wheel drive, and where lots of people drive subarus so they're widely accpepted. You won't get made fun of by the 5'7 little men in the F250s
