When I was a kid, I got to ride into Greenville S.C. in the cab of a Southern Railroad E8.

Similar to this one:

The engineer would have been fired had he been caught having me in the cab.

This...100% this. Love me some Greenville...nice and easy airport to get in and out of too.

Great downtown and Falls Park is beautiful.

For a city that's really up and coming, it's a bit on the conservative side, but I suppose that's true of the upstate as a whole. Seems like a great place to raise kids.

Not to mention some great whitewater rivers (Green, Chattooga) and pretty good wineries in the Saluda/Tryon, NC area that's just a short drive away.

Are you saying that is a negative or a positive?

Looking at a new neighborhood called Copper Creek. Anybody know anything about it?

Side question for people who know about the area - my family has almost 200 years of history in the Mauldin/Fountain Inn area but I haven't been there in probably 15 years or more. Mostly farmland and old people when I was a kid.

Sounds like those are pretty decent/pleasant "suburbs" of Greenville now?

Move downtown/uptown area

Avoid anywhere off Pelham rd. There’s a town call Travelers Rest in the way to Asheville that’s charming in its own right as welll

Someone else can correct me if they have a different view, but I'd consider Fountain Inn to be the southernmost suburb of Greenville today if you're heading down I-385.

That would be correct. With Mauldin and Simpsonville growth we are seeing more growth in that area. Enough growth that Fountain Inn will have its own high school next year. I think, I should know the exact numbers, but it is being built to hold around 2000 students.

To the one who hasn’t been there in 15 years there has been a lot of change. The upstate as a whole is moving away from a textile industry which is hurting to a more diverse economy. With the addition of BMW years ago we are seeing some business related to it. Bosch breaks has a big operation in Anderson just to name one.

The Upstate is booming and a shell of what it use to be

If I remember correctly, the op is going to get a job at the GE plant... If you have kids, I would strongly suggest the Riverside school district. Second would probably be Mauldin...but that would be a further commute..more like 25 minuytes

Columbia is growing big time to the NW up I-26 and Greenville is solidly growing SE down I-385. I think you can get from Columbia's outskirts to Greenville's outskirts in about an hour now. A lot has changed since 2000.

It depends on the person I suppose. If you're moving from a more liberal city like Portland, Austin, Asheville, etc., it would be a negative. Otherwise, it's probably a non-factor. Overall, it's a great city.

Suppose to be impartial but if I had young kids I too would probably look at Riverside schools. But warning to the OP, make sure with the district office that you are what we call GO code for those schools. I know some kids who live on one side of the road go to one school the other side go to a totally different school. I would call the district office to be sure.

We found a couple houses in Pelham Falls but they are all older. Finding newer homes with some nice neighborhood amenities but I like the older neighborhood charm.

Sellers at 437 River Way are super motivated. Looked at that house a couple weeks ago and still hear from their agent.

Scrims, I live 2 miles from copper creek in coachman plantation. Also built by mungo, but you are on bigger lots here.
I have 4 kids, the oldest two in 2nd grade and kindergarten. They go to Rudolph Gordon, which we absolutely love, and was expanded to have a middle school on the campus so our kids will go there through 8th grade before going to the new fountain inn high.

We love our house, and our neighborhood has probably 50 kids between 3 and 10 years old and adding more every day. Great neighbors, great school.

I used to work about a mile from top golf. 15 min commute when school wasn’t in and about 20-25 when school is in
