Nova/870.
I bought an 870 super mag new a few years back. It never gets cleaned properly, put in a case or treated well. Iv used it as a push pole while in the boat. It gets set in the mud/water if im in the AG fields hunting. Gets sprayed off with a water hose and a little oil shot in her. Its rusted/beat to shite but it still drops the birds the same.
I own two nice autos....personally I'm not accurate with them no matter how much I practice using them.
I too would second going straight to a 12ga for him. Can always go to lower brass or different shoulder pad. If hes not fully ready for a 12ga now he will be in a year or two anyway.

Go with a Beretta over and under. May be on the expensive side, but it is safe. He really doesn't need a third shot.

My 20 gauge pump recoils harder than my 12 gauge semiautomatic.
Makes sense. SA action absorbs some energy

Back in the 60's dad got a Marlin bolt 20 ga so I wouldn't waste shells. I was 13 and about the same size as your son. I hunted a lot in not the best place, a rice field on the edge of our neighborhood with permission from the landowner as long as I killed nutria which he gave me 50 cents each for. I shot way more nutria than I saw ducks, dove or quail

I was looking for a 20 gauge for my 11 year old son. Ended up with a 12 automatic and he loves it. Remington 1100. Shooting light loads and he doesn't complain about recoil at all. I just need to get the stock cut down to fit him better.

Open to 20 gauge. He is 5'-3". He is small for his age but is starting to hit his growing spurt in the past year.
parents bought me a 20 gauge for Christmas when I was 16. I love that gun, and I still use it today. I'm 68.

I bought my wife and my daughter each the Beretta A300 a few years ago and they love them. Gas operated, low recoil and shoot well. They’ve killed a lot of birds with them. One black synthetic and one camp so they don’t argue. Only shoots up to 3” but they aren’t shooting 3.5 anyway. Think they were about $650 or so.

That's the deal of the century. No reason to buy any other high end shotgun

If he's right handed then just start him off with a Mossberg 88.

My son finally bought his shotgun. He ended up with a Stoeger M3000 Bottom Oak in 12 Gauge. He saved his money and paid for the gun without any help from his old man. He is ready for turkey season now.

Please let me know where one can be found for $300-$500 and I’ll buy ten.

He got only one at Bowies for $549 plus tax. He got some unexpected Christmas money to expand his budget.

Bought my son a Stoeger last year. Benelli action with a lot lower price tag.
ETA: and it comes with a turkey choke.

I got mine in 1977, but don't use it as much any more; it's only chambered for 2.75" shells. Still use it on occasion, though.

20 gauge - Nova, pattern master code black turkey choke, TSS #9, get the grease hot.
