My dad did one that came back ‘irregular’ so he ended up having to get a traditional colonoscopy. The letter comes back and says there’s a 60% chance you’re fine and a 40% chance there’s a problem. Go see your doctor.

11% is the false positive rate. You are referencing false negatives. But with that said, I agree with your sentiment. Better to just get the colonoscopy done and not wonder. This test is designed for people who absolutely refuse to get a colonoscopy and will get scared enough to get one when it comes back positive. It’s a “better than nothing” screening test.

I actually worked for United Healthcare for a couple months. We’d ask our customers whether they wanted their free poop kit sent to them.

I’m 36. Had a colonoscopy Wednesday before they shut Baton Rouge down and elective procedures couldn’t be done. Did it due to family history. I was LOATHING it. That said, it was the easiest thing I’ve ever done. The prep wasn’t bad at all. Then I got there, they IV’d me. About 30 min later, rolled me back. I turned on my side and woke up in recovery. Wife said she was in the waiting room after they took me back for about 20 minutes. There were literally zero after effects. No bleeding, butthole didn’t hurt, literally like nothing happened. I had 9 polyps and they removed them. Thankfully not precancerous. And my next 2 dumps were incredible.

Well, apparently there are a couple of options. The old school way is you have to drink a gallon of the prep liquid over a 24 hour period. My dr (who is one of the best in BR) had me eat breakfast Tuesday morning and then Start a liquid diet at 10am. So I drank a ton of water, Gatorade, and at like 4:30 my wife made me a bowl of beef broth that was incredible. At 6pm I drank my first prep. It was a 12 oz bottle of liquid that tasted like pedialite. At 6:30 the fireworks started. It wasn’t like I couldn’t hold it. But it was every half hour on a he hour til about 9:30-10pm. I slept fine through the night. Then i drank my 2nd bottle Bottle at 6am. Same thing every half hour on the hour til about 9:30. Drove to the dr. And then the procedure happened shortly after. My experience was nothing short of a breeze.

You get an RX from the Dr. and it is some of the most foul tasting crap to drink, and you have to follow that with a LOT of water. DO NOT be far from a toilet after drinking that stuff or you will shite yourself.
I had to do one dose of that stuff around 4 pm the day before the procedure and again at 3 a.m. You will not believe how much you can empty out of your bowels with that laxative.
There are many different types of prep, but they pretty much do the same thing.
ETA: My appointment time to be at the clinic was 6:30 a.m.

Despite the misinformation posted here by know nothing big mouths, it is easy, painless, very accurate, and covered by insurance. My wife and I have both used it in the last year, recommended by our doctors, who each spoke very highly as to its reliability. I would do this over a colonoscopy any day.

It’s just taste bad. Can make you nauseated. Large volume of fluid if you’re not used to it

And here we have an excellent example. There is a disproportionate level of error in these tests, both positive and negative. Best to get a colonoscopy to be sure.

Two things about cologuard test
1. It has an 8% false negative rate. That means 8% of people who have colon cancer or advanced polyps have a negative test and think they are fine. That can often lead to detection of colon cancer at an advanced stage when symptoms finally occur.
2. Once you have a positive cologuard test, you lose your screening benefits for colonoscopy. It becomes a diagnostic colonoscopy that most have to pay out of pocket to get the test done.
Bottom line: Just get a colonoscopy. It’s painless and can save your life

Colonoscopy is not 100% reliable either, lots of variability in skill and care iwith which they are performed. A 2014 study found that 6% of cancers were missed.

About 15 years ago, Bob Breck did an on-air segment about his colonoscopy. Showed him in the gown before the procedure, showed him knocked out during, even showed the video from the in-bowel camera while it zapped polyps.
When Bob announced this was coming up after the commercial break, I hurriedly found a blank VHS tape and popped it into the VCR. Made sure to record the whole thing.
A few years later, I had company over, and remembered I'd taped this. Figured I'd get the tape out and run it for my guests, so I sorted through my tapes until I found the one labeled "BOB BRECK COLONOSCOPY."
Well, wouldn't you know it, I popped the tape in and it was nothing but static.
Boy did I have egg on my face!
When Bob announced this was coming up after the commercial break, I hurriedly found a blank VHS tape and popped it into the VCR. Made sure to record the whole thing.

Yep...I did one and my Doctor called me and said the result was positive. So then I had to have the colonoscopy done and everything was fine. Cologuard even tells you that false positives may occur. All this did was cause additional worry that was not needed...I wouldn't recommend this to anyone myself..
