Haven’t watched it yet but I’ve seen everyone flipping out over it. I work full time in digital marketing so I can’t imagine this documentary surprising much if at all.
Anyone watch it yet? Thoughts?

I have watched it. Everyone should watch it because most people are too stupid to understand social media. However they probably will call this fake news and turn it back to WWE and drink more mountain dews.

/We’ve created this amazing tool with endless possibilities
/Now we are realizing humans aren’t ready for this technology
/In fact, we believe we may have actually created the end of society.
///But - the only evidence we’ll provide behind our claim that society is ending is a rise in white supremacists and outsiders meddling with our elections???
Not worth the watch. Silicon Valley weirdos desperate to be in front of a camera conflating their importance to society.

Did the creators of this show forget about the cold war, the civil war, and the KKK?

This will be the most accurate thing said in this thread

I just hope that it shows people just how much money they are worth as the product.....Apple, Google, FB, Instagram, Pinterest, etc don't make shite by selling stuff.....they make literally 100s of billions by selling us.
I'm not saying watching it will change anyone's behavior, but it is at least good to be educated.

exactly. that’s the one underlying thing to learn from the entire show. They started out by selling ads, now they sell us.

No doubt it is a lot of this but there explanation of the technology at the 50000 ft lvl is pretty accurate.

Yes it is very good and if you stick through the whole documentary you should be terrified. The shite going on at these tech companies is insane

Wife and I watched it just last night. Scariest thing I've seen in years. Previous nailed it. These companies are only in it for the buck and you are worth a few bucks to them annually. Couple billion people in the world equals tidy profit.
They don't care about the truth, just stirring the pot to make a buck.

Anyone who believes these companies care about anything other than making a buck are nieve.

I watched parts of it. The data mining wasn’t surprising. The algorithms that are driving narratives and creating divisive views was interesting.
Basically, machine learning algos curate more than adds. They try and pick out news stories we are interested in as well as taylor search results using these data. It’s gotten to the point where most of our news feeds are dominated by media and info that meets our confirmation bias. The psychological ramifications are problematic for people that don't realize that social media and personalization services will create an echo chamber.

That was my biggest takeaway. This is what is destroying and dividing first world countries everywhere.

Line that stuck with me "AI is what it does. Not what it was designed to do."
Close as I can remember anyway

The natives in the Amazon and Africa are going to be the last people standing.
