this story is true (big if) I am guessing the manager is telling the OP what he wants to hear

Doubtful. The manager is likely trying to not lose business, and is being honest.

Had dinner last night and similar situation. Our server literally left the job in hr middle of the shift. Manager came by to explain, as a way to help keep our business in the future.

Inability to hire staff over free state bennies is happening all around you. Open your eyes.

Pandemic is a useful excuse for employers. State UI benefits are 13 weeks. Even with the fed extension it only goes to 26...and we are 60 weeks into the pandemic

Pensacola News article.

Wow. That’s a damning article about the quality of our workforce right now. No cooks or line cooks anywhere.

I completely believe the manager. Our daughter is a server in a nice restaurant in OKC. She’s also
A full-time student at OU and began this job last month. She is working five days a week, often working a double because of staff shortage. She’s bringing in about a thousand a week. She loves the money, but it is rough. She is either studying or working. She’ll work through the summer before returning to Norman. I see restaurants up here offering sign-up bonuses.

As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I gotta be real. Covid has been really really good to me from a financial standpoint. It’s all about mindset. Sure you can sit on your arse at home and collect unemployment but you’re not going to build any sort of long lasting financial independence from it. If you’re like me though, it’s about hustle. I’ve worked my arse off the past year, paid off all debts minus the student loans and put aside 15k in cash. I’m also in the market to purchase my first home. I’ve done all of that working in an industry that’s been decimated by Covid restrictions. Opportunities exist everywhere. You either learn to recognize them when they present themselves or you create your own.

No one wants to work

Our company is offering a delivery job for $17 an hour, 34-39 hours a week(paid for 40), and once trained, many weeks off a year(paid).

And NO ONE is even nibbling on it, let alone biting and applying.

Welfare wouldn't compete with what a waitress could earn at an understaffed restaurant. Sorry, not buying the manager's excuse.

You overestimate some people’s want to work for the difference in unemployment and what they would actually make. A lot would rather sit on their asses and make 2-3 hundred less a week to do nothing.

So I went to pay and the manager thanks us for our patience and says nobody wants to work anymore, they’re getting paid too much to stay home.

There are now hiring signs everywhere.

Why are we encouraging this?

This is how you usher in full blow socialism that is why they are doing it. Get more and more people on the government tit

No, they’re not. It’s $300 and taxed at 10%. Louisiana pays $247 a week max and is taxed at 10%. $547 a week taxed at 10% here so $492 a week.

I don't know if there is a fast food chain or casual dining chain out there right now that doesn't have a "now hiring" sign. There have been some places around me that have had days where they don't have enough staff to open.

Paying people more not to work...who'd have thunk there'd be repercussions?

We have a factory here in NEOhio.
Starting wages advertised at 20 an hour and a signing bonue north of 1200..

We are struggling to get people, get people to pass a drug screen, or get people to stay. It is like this all over the country in our sister factories.

So, they are clearing over $12 an hour for a 40 hour week, then my understanding they are getting max on the Louisiana Purchase Card. Hell, the job probably has to damn near pay $20 an for it to be more money than the government is paying them to stay home.

Maybe it isn't entirely the money -- maybe it's the working conditions. Treat people like shite and they won't want to deal with you. That goes for customers (not necessarily you) and management.

That isn’t the issue though. The mentality is basically if it can’t move you into the next “lifestyle” it isn’t worth working for the small change in cash. The idea of saving and planning isn’t gonna generate likes, follows, admiration from neighbors/friends/random people in public.
