I still remember the 1st video I ever saw on MTV. I got to go hang out for a week with a cousin in the summer of 1984. He lived in the burbs and I lived in the sticks. I Was well aware of Mtv, but had never watched. Showed up at his house and Billy Idol was on singing "eyes without a face". I thought it was cool, then ZZ top came on with "Legs". After that, I was hooked.
It's ashame what Mtv is today. It hasn't been Music television for a very long time.
Pretty much the same situation for me, only a year earlier in 1983. I think the first video was Please Please Tell Me Now or Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). It was Summer and had nothing to do, so I stayed up nearly all night trying to remember as much as I could. One night, I caught a bug and was sick for about a day and a half, which put a dent in my viewing, but trekked on watching. I remember Kurt Loder would break in with MTV News and I'd take a break from watching.

One of my favorite videos in the early days wasn't a big hit, but I loved ZZ Top's "TV Dinners".

So this was a nice trip down memory lane. They ended With Juice Newton "Angel of the Morning."
And in two hours, NOT ONE black or minority artist was featured.
So un-woke at launch.

I wish there were HD copies of those air checks complete with stereo sound.
Those Ampex cart machines were a lot of trouble

They took quite a bit of grief about this very thing early on.

In a 1983 interview with David Bowie, the singer pressed Goodman on MTV playing few music videos by black artists during that time - MTV actually played few music acts that were black, Latino, Asian, or Arab at the time. Goodman's defense was that the network was thinking in terms of "narrow casting", and that they were concerned about negative reaction from their white audience at seeing artists of color prominently featured on the MTV network.

They originally didn’t want to play Michael Jackson.

I scrolled through the first 40 minutes or so and haven't heard of half of those bands.

I listened to the entire thing and didn't know many of the bands. I definitely had never seen that cringe Robert Palmer video. It was worth watching to the end to see Juice Newton.

Pat Benatar was soooooooo hot.
She, Joan Jett, Debbie Harry and Stevie Nicks were duking it out for rockinest babes.

Those of you pining for the original 80’s MTV should watch “I Want My 80’s”. It plays everything from The Cure and Joy Division to Bon Jovi and Cyndi Lauper - legit waltz down memory lane.
Oh, and if you don’t have it, “call your cable company and say I want my MTV”
