Fence benefits both
$ from both
Not really a question

My neighbors fence went down in Laura. He asked me to split the cost. I declined. If he wouldn’t have put it back up, I would have put one up. I don’t need a fence partner.

I don’t understand this line of thinking people have with fences. If I decide I want something, I pay for it. I’m not buying your shite because you decided you want it and you perceive I benefit in some way. Wtf is that?

We have it. It looks great but a pain to weedeat sharp looking edge due to the gaps.

I've split costs with two of my neighbors, no problem.
Grats on getting them to let you mooch off of them?

There are very specific laws in the LA Civil Code regarding fences
what is it?
It's pretty damn convoluted. You would have to go study it. It all came from when they settled the French Quarter and homes often shared common walls and fences. If the neighbor wants to attach or build onto your wall or fence they have to pay you for half of that section. Stuff like that.

I Just bought a house in July. There a really nice 8ft privacy fence between me and my neighbor. I have no idea who paid for the fence as it was up before I bought the house. Good side faces me, so I assume that’s my fence. 1/2 of it broke and fell on my neighbors property with Ida. I haven’t even met the guy yet, but I figured, my fence so my responsibility. I’d feel like a jackass asking this cat for money especially since I haven’t even introduced myself yet. If he feels he should pay me half, he will. If not, I’m not losing sleep over it. Fence is up now and that’s all that matters to me.

The finished, or good side of the fence faces the outside of your property, visible to neighbors and the outside world.
Please note that some building codes stipulate that your fence must be installed in this fashion, and that it isn't optional. As always, we suggest to check with your local code requirements before purchasing or installing a fence.
Even if your code doesn't require your fence to be installed in this way, we still recommend doing so for most applications. It may seem odd but your property will look better from the outside, thus increasing your curb appeal. The finished side of the fence is also harder to climb. This is especially true if you have a wooden fence because the 2x4's make a ladder of sorts for someone to climb.

Agree , I don’t need a fence partner either.
About 5 years ago, I had a new fence built at the same time of home addition and new pool build. I didn’t ask for money, but both side neighbors told me individually they would contribute. 5 years later, I never saw a dime from either. No big deal, don’t care.
A portion of the east side of the fence just came down during the storm. I already set up the repair and it’s supposed to get done on Monday. Again, I won’t be approaching the neighbor for any contribution.

They can build a fence that doesn't have a good side or a bad side, maybe someone can tell us what that's called.
I think it's called a privacy screen. Where the fence board are 3 or so inches apart and the same on the opposite side with the boards placed center of the gaps on the other side.

The neighbor can claim the fence on his insurance and get another 50% from you for that section of fence. Sounds like a win win for him
Bingo

My neighbor and I propped the fence back up and we will go 50/50 on it. It benefits both of us, why do it any other way.

ETA: OP, does the neighbor have any other damages to his property from the storm? Just make sure he isn’t filing a claim with his homeowners insurance and getting you to contribute to the cost after he already plans to collect from his insurance company too.

Whoever the flat side faces is usually the owner. Owner should be 100% responsible for renewing the fence.

Lost 50' of the 80' cedar fence here. By all rights its mine to replace and I was good with that. I explained to my neighbor I will replace the entire fence including both of our gates in the coming weeks.
Being good neighbors pays off...she was widowed about 4.months ago and I have been cutting the grass and general upkeep. Now she insists on paying 50% of materials of the new fence.
We haven't decided if we will allow that or not.... in the mean time our dog is enjoying the expansion to HIS backyard.
Let the widow chip in. Given she’s lonely this will in some small way make her feel a part of something/sense of community.
