Articles like this make me so happy to know just how shitty these journalist's salaries are

Miserable, entitled pricks with nothing better to do with their time. If Native American causes mean so much to you, go donate time and money to helping those on reservations, or do literally anything other than virtue signal in some dying form of media.

I'm sure wailing and gnashing your teeth about a harmless chop is going to solve all the real issues facing the Native American community.

The salaries are shitty because the profession is incredibly diluted due to the prevalence of the internet. It is not very difficult or financially burdensome for anyone to get content published.

Legacy media (such as SI in this instance) simply can't bring in the revenue they could pre-internet. So they can only hire people willing to work for peanuts to be their writers. The marketplace tells these people their services aren't all that valuable (otherwise they would be making FAR more money). So they have to physiologically supplement their low monetary income with an over-inflated sense of self worth. "Sure I only make $25k a year and can only afford to live with 3 roommates in an 800 sq foot loft in a quasi-sketchy part of Brooklyn, but I am VERY important to society."

That over-inflated sense of self worth is necessary for their self esteem. Otherwise, the objective and logical part of their brain would say busting arse to get content out for $25k a year just isn't worth it.
