My son and I had a conversation about this recently at least in the context of a comparison to LSU. He graduated from Arkansas. "My response to him: 45 minutes south of Fayettevile, you find Fort Smith. About that far south of Baton Rouge you find New Orleans". Their football playing population doesn't provide for much of a recruiting base.

A lot of high schools and especially the ones in the Arkansas Delta consolidated because Lake Village school district sued the state because of lack of funding. This was in the early 2000s during the Bush no child left behind policies.

Consolidation destroyed high schools and thus football as well. The Arkansas Delta use to produce a decent amount of talent.
