A Whole Foods Tax Question
Posted on 5/18/11 at 3:29 pm

I had lunch at Whole Foods today and just noticing my receipt has 4% state tax, 5% city tax and 3% Food City Tax. 12% total.
WTF?
Never seen it. Haven't called about it because I just looked at it but me thinks me getting screwed.

Did you add it all up? I think the 3% food city tax is a further breakdown of the 5% city tax.
I ate there today as well, and my food was a $6.49 sandwich and a $1.39 drink, for a subtotal of $7.88. Add 9% tax and you get $8.60, which is what I was charged.

I would do the math first. I've never noticed or heard of a food city tax.
Groceries are exempted from sales tax at the 4% rate, but you ate in store so you get to pay that one.
BR has the 5% city tax, but from my understanding that the maximum rate of taxation in the state combined with the 4% state tax can be no greater than 9%.

I bought a few grocery items and paid at the sushi counter with my lunch as well which is why it was broken into three separate taxes. My car is gone with the receipt in it and I'll check when it gets back but I am sure that is what happened.

The previous poster is correct. You are not being charged 12% on the total.

I noticed the same thing on my receipt from Whole Foods Arabella yesterday and I didnt purchase any prepared foods or non food items (unless my herbal tea falls under some strange category). Just chalked it up to living in Nola.

You can't be taxed over 9%, no?
EDIT: Oh wait, can a local tax (exceeding that) be voted upon?

Should I have said my wife is gone in my car?

I was trying to figure out my bill one day so someone could pay me back. It is broken down three ways, but is not over 9%.
