Adding onions in chicken noodle soup recipe? Red vs white

Got a recipe here for chicken noodle soup. It doesn't call for onions.

How will it effect the final product if I add onions? I would think most people use white.

On that same note, anyway I could incorporate red onions into it? I love them.

If you like the red, use them. They are a bit sweeter, so I wouldn't care for them in that soup, so much. I would use yellow or the pearls, as suggested above. I always put onions in mine, but some don't because the homemade stock is made with onions....the flavor is there.
