How does that “age” for a year? Does the alcohol keep the milk from spoiling?

Yep it’s pretty boozy which keeps the eggs and dairy from spoiling. I highly recommend trying it out.

I've got a little left from last year. looking forward to polishing that off

Awesome stuff. Have two jugs under my bed since late July. Can't wait.

High enough proof.
One year I sampled every couple months. At months 4-6 or so, I found it a little “metallic” tasting, but it smoothed back out.

What recipe do you use, doc?
Posted on 10/21/21 at 2:45 pm to Trout Bandit
Made mine on October 1st.

Made a batch at the beginning of October.
Second batch last week with rye whiskey and half brown/half white sugar.
Interested to see if there is any appreciable difference.
It’s just so smooth.

Please report results. The brown sugar aspect is intriguing.
With this batch from January 2021, I swapped high proof rum for traditional plus the regular bourbon and brandy. We’ll see

I need to try this!
What kind of cognac do you guys use? Or do you sub it with anything else? I can honestly say I’ve never purchased any before.
Also, what do you guys get to store it?

I bought some cheap Armagnac from Martin's to use and I store it in 16oz Ball jars.

I made a large batch with 20 whiskey bottles filled.

I used Pierre Franand cognac ($40), Smith and Cross jamaican rum ($25) and Elijah Craig bourbon ($25). My advice is don't go cheap on this, but you don't need to go breaking the bank either. Cognac is by nature a bit pricier than rum and bourbon, so that $40 is about equivelent to the $25. I have made this with cheaper spirits in the past, and I promise you it makes a major difference. Since it is so boozy, you want to make sure you are using liquor that has high quality flavor. You will be glad you did in the end.

I usually use myer's rum, buffalo trace and cheapo cognac. I'll look into a nicer bottle of cognac this year. I tried to use some brown sugar last year and couldn't tell much difference.
i have always just stored in gallon water jugs

myer's rum
that Jamaican rum which AB calls for is actually pretty important to the final flavor profile. I used bacardi in the past, but this time I went and made sure to grab some Jamaican. There's a distinctive flavor in it that enhances the egg nog tremendously. This is the first time I made a batch using higher quality spirits, and I will never go back. It's worth it

nicer bottle of cognac this year
I started tasting different cognacs to find the one I liked most, and I settled on that PF. I do not like cognacs, but this one is actually really good. I enjoyed sipping on it as is, which was my qualification for anything I was putting into this mixture.

I mean absolutely no offence, but do yourself a favor and use a better rum than Myer’s. There’s way better taste profiles out there fo little if any more money

i'll try it this year. don't know much about rum as i don't particularly enjoy it. i always bought myers just to get a dark jamaican rum.
