Not really looking for a discussion on the merits or wisdom of buying live crawfish from walmart. Would just like to hear from anyone who has bought them there?
Size? Cost? Comparison in quality to other vendors?
Walmart in Boutte currently has for 1.99 lb.
TIA

Care to elaborate?
Do you know where they are obtaining said crawfish?
Do you just hate Walmart in general?
Is Walmart dealing with supplier of ill repute?
Do you own a seafood market and fear the competition?
I'm looking for some information. Not your knee jerk anti walmart opinion.

Did you make sure they're not Chinese?

Who cares? If Ming Ling can get me live crawfish for $1.99 shipped all the way from China...Pierre should be able to do better that $2.79 coming from Eunice.

Pretty sure Walmart is buying from Pierre by the way.

If they are significantly cheaper...ME!
Walmart is buying them from local vendors...that is why your local crawfish monger is higher than normal.

Uh, yea, live crawfish from Walmart would almost have to be from Louisiana? Or are some of y'all crazy enough to think Walmart is shipping 1.99/lb live crawfish all the way from another state? (Much less freakin China!)
Look at their size and activity level. If they look normal, buy them. I don't know what could be wrong with buying perfectly normal size/looking live crawfish from Walmart.

I didn't know Walmart sold live crawfish but I dam sure buy the frozen Chinese ones. They're more consistent size-wise and half the price. No effin way they should be able to grow/ship them cheaper than home-grown.
We used to sell off our farm to Sweeden and by the time they got there they'd pay $14.00 for 8 or so "select" crawfish.

Yeah they love thier crawfish there. More than Texas? IDK, but i know they have some local variety which is inferior to ours (obviously why they pay so much)

If you can't tell the vast difference between frozen Chinese and fresh Louisiana crawfish tails in your etouffe, I suggest you get a NASCAR sticker on your pickup truck and move to Montgomery. If you compare the 12 oz Chinese trash to the 16 oz Louisiana packages, the price difference is usually small.

Very true.
I don't have a problem with Wal-Mart selling locally farmed, live crawfish. They support local farmers and provide the same product you get elsewhere at a lower price. I might check out the size of them next time I make a WM run, just to see how they look.

ive asked about them at WM when i saw the sign
don't remember exactly what was said but they are dropped off by fishermen a few days a week and i think you can reserve them, but i really can't remember

But Walmart is putting the guy on the corner out of business. Crawfish are a Louisiana food. Support Louisiana businesses when buying crawfish. Don't pad the pockets of some a-hole investor just to save a quarter or two. Support your neighbor.

Heard from a local wholesaler in BR - Walmart gets whatever is left over from their other customers.
So, basically, Walmart is cheaper but has markedly smaller crawfish - definitely not "select".

This.
Buy all of your cheap Asian plastic stuff and unhealthy crap food from Wal-mart if you must, but damn, let crawfish be one last place left where we can still try to support the mom and pop businesses.

HEB in Houston does the same thing, they are cheap but small and half are dead.
