Anybody ever use Wood Pellets in the tray of your Propane Smoker instead of Wood Chips?

Logically, seems like a good plan, but have any of you ever done this? If so, what brand did and wood type did you use?

Use to use them all the time. There is also a method with foil pouches that works decently. Cleans up easier as well.

I seen a tray that zig zags in and out to put pellets in on your grill. Light one side and it will slowly work its way through. Don't know how well it works but had me interested.

Thanks for the recs, guys ... but I'm trying to see if anyone has used them instead of wood chips in the tray of a propane VERTICAL smoker, not a grill.

I've got a similar question. Has anyone ever used heating pellets in their smoker? I saw a 40 lb bag of heating pellets at Menards, Magic Spark, they were 100% hardwood, no fillers and the 40 lb bag was 6 bucks. The 40 lb bag of pit boss competition blend I ended up buying was about 20 bucks. They seemed like the exact same thing.

In my experience. Those are not the same. The heating pellets are too hard for the augers to break up and they bind up and get stuck.

I use them in my electric smoker and they work just fine
