My grandmother and her ladies around SWLA used to make Mahogany Cakes. These memories are 35 years old, but I've never had anything quite like them. Chocolate and coffee flavors inside, and then a grey frosting that had almost a little crunch on the outside and then super dense and sweet the rest of the way. Then topped with chopped pecans. At least that is the way I remember it. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

I've never had one, but the recipe below says it's 100 years old, so it may be close. There are a good many on the internet. You could peruse them and see which ones have the flavors you remember. Maybe combine a few of them to try to get the flavors.

Talking to a few relatives today and one of them said they had a copy of the actual "Aunt Janita" recipe! Here it is if anyone wants to try it. My dad said that whenever they got one they would eat half and freeze half. And that it was just as good out of the freezer.
