Unless you're a certified beer geek, you probably didn't notice the hullabaloo this week on social media – three Louisiana breweries all announced they are launching new IPAs with space-themed names and labels.

Posters to the various sites and forums pondered if this was some sort of conspiracy.

quote:

The three breweries – Parish, Bayou Teche, and Gnarly Barley – had a pretty good laugh at the happy aligning of the stars that saw each release a big IPA with a space based theme.

quote:

Parish is releasing a beer named Opus Vert with a cool looking astronaut on the label.

From what I understand this beer will be out early to mid-May. If it’s anything like Parish's other IPAs, this one will be mouthwatering and a world class IPA.

It supposed to be juicy, which in beer-geek terms means the hops will provide the beer with nice and bold citrus flavors.

Bayou Teche’s new Double IPA is named A Giant Hop for Mankind.

Double IPAs are even bigger and hoppier, and this one is over 8 percent alcohol and lifts off with 137 IBUs (International Bittering Units).

It may be one of the bitterest beers ever released in Louisiana. It too has a cool looking Apollo astronaut on the label and in beer geek terms its hops are dank – they have aroma and the flavor of the hop plants cousin marijuana. It will be released on April 30th.

Finally, we all just learned that Gnarly Barley in Hammond is releasing a beer called Big DIPA — i.e. the Big Dipper. DIPA is the abbreviation for Double IPA, and since all of Gnarly’s releases have been solid and mind-blowingly tasty, I look forward to this beers debut soon.

I'm jacked up about that new parish ipa though. They told me the plan is to rotate that with ghost so there's always one available.

It'd be nice if BT can put out a good DIPA.. But I have my doubts

I think the competition to make a great IPA between the LA breweries is a good thing for consumers.

Is it city wide, or specialty stores like Cuban's and Brewniverse?

While none of them have outright said it, my conversations with them leaves me with the impression they love doing the barrel aged stuff, obviously themed with Louisana and Belgian/German roots.

I think several of their barrel beers are quite good. IPAs other than Cocodrie, been underwhelmed.

grocery stores will probably only carry Canebrake and South Coast though

maybe some will carry Envie

It's a Belgian IPA, though. Other Belgian ones I've had, like Stone's, are similar. None are big hop bombs.

The Bayou Peche is the only thing I will buy from Bayou Teche, but that if it's under $10 a bomber.

I shouldn't do it, but I'll probably try the BT DIPA. I just don't want to be let down AGAIN.

I saw them say that on FB. Quite possibly the stupidest thing to say about your beer. 3
Nobody is brewing a 137 IBU beer period unless you're just using extracts to make it bitter for no reason.
The IBU race and advertising high IBUs is so out of style.

BT has never exactly been in touch with what's trending. They kinda do their own thing. Some consumers appreciate that. I'm pretty underwhelmed generally.
