Other than Whole Foods

I enjoy a good grocery store. One that has a large variety of produce, a nice seafood and meat selection, and top it off with a nice wine section.

Ralphs..

Good selection of meats, not the greatest quality however but good.

Good Prices

Produce section is a little lacking.

friendly people

I'd vote for Calandro's, by default. It's funny, in SE Louisiana we have the best food, the best cooks and the best restaurants per capita in the US. But we have the worst grocery stores.

I travel and go in stores in other parts of the country, Houston, Burlington VT, even a gastronomic disaster area like Birmingham has much better stores. I go to Bruno's there all the time, great deli, very nice meat section and good produce.

Why do we get the dregs? It amazes me.

+1. It's a shame. It really is.

i've only been there once or twice but i didn't like it. granted i only went there to pick up a couple of things. but everything seemed so smushed together and there wasn't much room to move around. plus that parking lot needed to be repaved 2 years ago. and i thought the people that worked there were kind of white-trashy and not super friendly like at ralph's and whole foods. but i still think ralph's is overpriced. i don't think whole foods has a close second, except for maybe fresh market

I guess you don't. They have produce, seafood, meat, and cheeses like nothing you will fine in any other La grocery store.

I can't afford to do all my shopping there, but I do go get some stuff from time to time.

Yeah, it's not that complicated. Their produce is better than any store in LA, period. To get better you'd have to go to a farmer's market and most of those don't have the breadth of stuff that Whole Foods does.

Exactly, Whole Foods may be overpriced but their selection is unmatched from what I have seen in this area.

I guess it would be Whole Foods by default...But you have to be very careful purchasing dated goods at Whole Foods, they'll leave stuff out well past the expiration date...I guess they think because they're Whole Foods, that no one will check the dates.

I like Calandro's & Ralph's too, but I do think Ralph's deli gets way too much hype for serving very mediocre food.

FWIW Albertson's produce is terrible. The stock people pitch the vegetables into the bins like baseballs.

I live in Central and shop at Oak Point (the only other options are to brave the white trash of walmart or go to that ghetto wasteland Winn Dixie). It's a good store, but the produce section is shameful. And they don't sell condoms.
