Is Ba Mien in the east? If not, there used to be one. It was great. They always had Viet laser disks playing the strangest damn crap. Like a mix of Indian type line dancing and Disney fanciful editing.
Their egg roll wraps were awesome.

This place was horrible the last time I went. It's been over a year though.

I wish the pho was better, but it just wasn't that good. Poboys are excellent.
Mine would be:
1. Tan Dinh
2. Pho Bang East
3. Pho Orchid Express (way better than the original IMO)
4. Kim Anh
5. Pho Bang WB
I have never been to Lilly's but see lots of mentions. Will have to check it out.

1) Tanh Dinh
2) Pho Tau Bay
3) Pho Bang
4) Nine Roses
I haven't tried Lilly's pho yet.

I like the original better. They just opened one on St Charles too.

Now I'm not claiming to be a pho maven by any means, I'm just a junkie who has 2-3 bowl a week habit.
If that is not a Pho Maven, I don't know what is.

Is Dong Phoung any good? Anything there good?
Posted on 2/17/14 at 2:16 pm to Gris Gris
Yes. I normally go there after fishing so I just go in the bakery and not the restaurant. Tons of great stuff. I normally get Banh Mi and meat pies.

Yes, both the bakery and the restaurant are worth a visit. The restaurant menu has a bunch of chinese american lunch special/combination plate type things, but if you look past all that, you will find some interesting items. Herb plates are usually overflowing with more than the obligatory bean sprouts, cilantro, and basil. I like the bo la lot (sorry, I don't know how to do proper diacritical marks), which is a beef sausage wrapped in grape leaves over rice vermicelli. The banh xeo crepes are also very tasty.
On the bakery side, you can get a variety of meat pies filled with everything from BBQ pork to sausage & egg, jicama, and ground pork. The cinnamon rolls are super tasty and very large. Banh mi in the bakery are stupid cheap and good; bread is baked on site.

Sounds great. I've never been and it seems to be a jewel in NO East. How's the pho there?

My $0.02:
1. Kim Anh's
 /thread
then... I go out of my way home to pick up from here for at least two or three evenings a week. It's on the way home, just a longer route.
2. Lilly's - spicy shrimp
only been twice, can't wait until I'm in the area again.
3. Pho Tau Bay - miss working on the Wank for this gem...
4. Pho Orchid
5. Magasin or Nine Roses
Namese is new age fusion BS. I'm not going there to get a bowl of Pho for $10+.
MoPho is new age fusion BS. I'm not going here either to get a bowl of Pho for $10+.
Pho Bistreaux is about that fusion BS as well.
Ba Chi's broth and meats in their Pho gross me out but they load it up with shallots and green onion, only eat here really for Baco's when in vicinity.

I beg to differ. Pho Bistrieaux is a pretty straight ahead pho & bun shop. The only nods to "fusion-y" anything are the slider appetizers. Stick to the pho and you won't notice much difference from any other shop in town.
And again with the Kim Anh...that stuff is bad. A MSG festival, unbalanced. Sometimes it is sweet, other times too salty. Yuk.

You get out of here with that.
I agree about pho bistro, its not that bad and the Banh Mi is pretty good.

Pho at the original has gone downhill. I only order the bun bo hue at the Clearview location these days. Pho at the Express tastes like the original used to. Went last week and it was spot on.
Posted on 2/17/14 at 7:08 pm to Woody
i like Express better too. it always tastes fresher to me

I was sitting at the bar at the original for takeout one day and overheard the owner talking to another gentleman. Said the guy cooking at the Express used to be at the Clearview location. Tastes like it to me.

I'm kind of new to the pho deal. Just wanted to thank all of you for a great thread.
