Hey guys, I’m moving to Natchitoches for the next 2 years. Any good restaurant recs? I’m going Saturday to look at housing and wanted to eat breakfast or brunch there so if there is anything specific for those as well, I would like some recs. Thanks.

The best restaurants in town are Mayeaux's and Lasyone's.
Mayeaux's is more on the lunch-dinner side, and Lasyone's is breakfast-brunch-lunch.
If you're only having one meal pick one of those.

Lasyone's is trash. Went last July with wife's friend from Natchitoches because it's the spot locals recommend. Piccadilly has better food, let that sink in. The 'famous' meatpies were awful, ones at Wal-Mart deli are much better. Fried green beans tasted like cardboard, red beans and rice tasted like they opened up a can of kidney beans and poured it on top of rice. I can't even remember what else we had because it was all bland and tasted like it was cooked by a 6 grade home economics class. Others recommended the Italian place on the river down the road, we should have gone there.

French Market Express. One of the best gas station “delis” in Louisiana.

Is that the one right off 49?

Your wall of text has eliminated your credibility.
Congrats, you played yourself.

Shut up.

A friend has been to Cane River Commissary and reported that it is good. It's a 15 minute drive south of town near Oakland Plantation.
A blogger I trust spent some time there working on a Masters and wrote up three soul food joints and Peggy’s Homemade Pizza that he really liked.
Soul Food Gumbo: Natchitoches Beyond the Meat Pie
Flying Heart took over the Cane River Brewing location. Their beer is nothing special, but they make good pizzas.

Yes, the commissary is a good spot, but it's off the beaten path.

Cane River Commissary, Mariners, Mama’s Oyster Bar are all solid IMO

I love Lasyone's meat pies. We ate there in the last 6 months and brought home the frozen pies as we've done many times in the past. I don't know much about the other food because we always eat the meat pies. I think someone had the gumbo last time and enjoyed it. We had some corn fritters that were good. I don't care for the Cajun dirty rice much, though.

I thought Lasyone's meat pies were pretty forgettable too. The pastry was flaky and good, but the meat filling was bland and unremarkable.

I don't know what it was but we didn't like them at all ?
Our friend we were with, teaches at NW St., told us to pick some up at a roadside stand on the way out. Don't remember what it was called but they were far superior. It's great that it's a local business but we didn't care for it. We didn't try the breakfast items they may have been good.

We are going up to Natchitoches for the day tomorrow and we will be hitting Papa's for lunch. Mama's is next door but i am personally not a fan of the menu.
Make the drive about 8 miles outta town to Clarance and visit Grayson's BBQ. Everything made in house including the buns/bread. Its not a good Texas bbq but its not bad and its not expensive either. (YW!)
French Market Express is good gas station food BUT those pies are all made from scratch daily.
The pies are another reason we are going (Easter desserts LOL)!

Grayson's BBQ in Clarence

The wife is from there, there are a couple of good places but honestly, your better off cooking at home or driving to Shreveport or Alexandria.
Mama’s, Papa’s, Mariners, Sea and Sirloin in Campti, Grayson’s in Clarence, and a pretty good Chili’s is all that’s there. I will say that Natchitoches has the finest Taco Bell in the state. That is the good indicator of the best dining in the area.

In 1972 the Waddle Inn was my favorite. The fried chicken was divine. There may be some new places now.

I’m a Natchitoches resident and you’ve pretty much received the best recommendations so far but I’ll chime in.
Mayeauxs is definitely the best sit down type of restaurant in town. Clay Mayeaux owned Mama’s and Papa’s years ago and sold. After a couple years he got back in the restaurant business and opened Mayeauxs. He’s a very present restaurant owner and it shows in comparison to other places in town.
Pioneer Pub has pretty good bar food.
There’s been mention of Graysons BBQ in Clarence. It’s okay but Sweeties BBQ on Texas St is better imo. It’s only been open a few months. He’s a good dude that competes on a couple of the BBQ circuits and decided to open a restaurant.
Best burgers in town are at Marie’s on Texas St. She cooks out of a little portable building. Just a really solid, old fashion style burger. To go only and cash only.
I don’t really understand the hate Lasyones is receiving. It’s a good lunch spot. I agree that I prefer other meat pies over the ones there but everything else is good.
French Market Express has some great plate lunches and hot box items.
Southern Classic has the best fried chicken in town and always worth mentioning in my opinion.

Is Maglieaux's not worth a shite? We went to the Christmas light deal and ate there a couple of years ago. I remember it being pretty good...
