I haven't had canned asparagus since childhood. They almost seem like an entirely different manner of food in a can...but a shadow of their potential. The consistency is just awful. Asparagus and brussel sprouts should always be fresh, it's just a waste of time otherwise. But good luck, can't imagine any way of preparation that will make them palatable.

This is a good assessment and I mostly agree.

I have an odd affinity for them from childhood memory, though.

I wouldn't try to cook them, given the mushiness as described above. Just incorporate them in a salad somehow with a vinaigrette type dressing, is all I'd do.

They definitely aren't anything like fresh asparagus.

its already to eat, grandparents used to mash it up with Hellmans and some lemon juice and feed it to us younguns. I used to get it and guacamole mixed up a lot growing up.

Canned asparagus is mushy and can't take a lot of heat. I usually see it served cold. I don't care for it, but since it's mushy, you could puree it and make an cream of asparagus soup. The flavor is not the same as fresh, either.

As a kid I was only exposed to canned asparagus and I thought it was disgusting and wrote it off for a long time until I had it fresh off the grill w/ salt and pepper. It was delicious and I like they way it makes my pee smell earthy!

Sorry I asked and sorry you're stuck with a can of asparagus. Donate it to the food bank.

Throw in garbage. Replace with fresh asparagus.

Just to give a suggestion. Drain and rinse. simmer on low, add butter, salt and pepper, Parm/reg'o and juice of half a leno. Can't re-gain texture but it's better than just throwing it away.
