I've only had clam chowder once in my life at a San Fran restaurant, and I loved it. A recent oral surgery has put me on a soft foods diet, so I added a can of Progresso chowder to the list.

Is it edible? I know it can't be as good as what I've had. Any tips to flavor it up?

Clam chowder is not hard to make from scratch. there are many good recipes out there.

Red potatoes, celery, onion, black pepper, clam juice, heavy cream, and clams.

Edited to add - and as Riverdiver said, corn. Fresh cutoff the cob is best.

Normally, I would, but these pain pills don't have me in the mood for much cooking.

I make a basic crockpot potato soup that I can modify with clams, corn, and/or shrimp.

My apologies. How could I have forgotten the corn? Shame on me.

It’s not terrible, but it’s got too many potatoes. I always buy an extra can of clams to add to it, along with some Tabasco sauce.

2 cans cream of potato soup
1 can clam chowder
1 can cream of celery
2 cans of clams with juice
half & half.

Put all of these ingredients in a pot. Add half & half until the consistency is how you like it. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder and heat it up. This makes a pretty serviceable, easy clam chowder.

Pretty tasty, and goes great with a grilled cheese sandwich.

Canned clam chowder can be pretty scarce on clams. I like it for a quick meal, but when the weather cools off it’s home made if possible.

Ways to kick it up…add some canned clams, S/P, garlic powder, Old Bay, cayenne, Sriracha, couple dashes of Lea and Perrins, finely diced onion or red Chile pepper, top with finely diced crispy bacon, chives, green onion, dill. Lots of options to modify it. Like I said before, I make potato soup then add different things, corn, shrimp, crab, clams, oysters…whatever profile you want.

It’s basically just potato soup with clams added, it’s a blank palette. If it’s too thick, thin it with milk, cream, or half and half.

Progresso clam chowder is okay for canned soup. I usually buy the refrigerated clam chowder at my local supermarket and amend it with additional clams.

Canned clam chowder is edible, especially if you doctor it up, but it's no where near as good as the versions I have gotten in Maine. Personally, I didn't care for the Progresso brand. It had a chemical taste. I usually go for Campbells. The Bar Harbor brand is a little better than Campbells to me.

Oyster stew is something else you can doctor up and made decent.

If you see Ivar's Clam Chowder (in a pouch in a frozen food section), IMO it's excellent.

Sam's Club got it in for a couple of years and I used to be able to order it from Seattle. No longer available, but I keep looking.

You might want to get Better than Bullion's Lobster Base and make your own lobster bisque. No chewing involved to enjoy it.

New England or Manhattan or Rhode Island clam chowder? For those that know you can buy it in a can. Rhode Island is my favorite and it’s not hard to make. Your mom or gf or kids can make it if you can’t. Not so much fat and sodium too as canned soup.
