Chicken smell

Can someone tell me what that smell is from packaged chicken? I cant really describe it but it has a strange odor to it. I swear it has a funny smell about 3/5 times i buy chicken. I usually throw it out but I'm sick of wasting it. There is always a good date on it and it looks fine. I cooked it yesterday and it tasted normal. Am I going to die? What is this smell? Does it have to do with packaging?

Stop buying terrible, tray-packaged chicken. The smell is usually stronger in previously frozen chicken that sits defrosting in the supermarket case. The absorbent pad beneath the chicken soaks up the drippings; solution-added chickens leak way more fluid than non-enhanced birds.
Go to a store with a butcher case, buy non-tray/non-shrinkwrapped poultry. Voila, no smell. Pay more per pound, but none will be wasted.

Wat? Does it smell like it's gone bad or just like raw chicken?

I understand that there are better ways to buy chicken but the packaged chicken such as Sanderson's farms is not terrible.

Funny how chicken to me is firs even over fish when it comes to finding it's bad. It doesn't matter what the date on the package says. Chicken can go bad simply by NOT being stored properly.
I once picked up a two pack of whole chickens at Sam's and the date was fine. It wasn't until I got to the checkout and caught a whiff of something really bad. I realized after the cashier had rung up the chicken that it got worse. Here I am sniffing food items and find the chicken really funky bad. I had her take it out, off the bill and went off to wash my hands.
Be careful when buying chicken and get the package that doen't smell. The date could be good but if it wasn't stored properly or it sits on top of those open air coolers it has a better chance of being bad.

pull it out of the package and let it sit for a bit. if the odor disappears it's probably just some gas created with the packaging. if the smell is still there, toss it.

Yes it is. Those bloated two pound chicken breasts are not something that occurs in nature.
Go to Maxwell's Market or Whole Foods and get your never-frozen chicken from the display case where it's sitting on a bed of ice. If you're a demanding shopper, ask to sniff it first, especially at MM.
