Is it easy to tell the difference between these two if you were looking at them side by side and raw? I have a freezer full of both of these , but they weren't labeled which is which. Thanks.

halibut will be much thinner filets compared to the cod.

not necessarily. they got some great big halibut out there

Frozen could be tricky, i would think the halibut would be whiter

Actually I would say just the opposite. I travel to Alaska frequently and bring fish home from trips. I also order from a local vendors in Anchorage pretty often. The bulk of what I order consists of Cod and Halibut and Halibut cheeks when I can find a deal.

Typically the Halibut fillets are thicker than the Cod. Also, the halibut will often have a greyish vein line that stands out more than the cod. Halibut is also a bit more dense and holds up better when freezing.

Sometimes I’ll eat a fish sandwich just for the halibut.

I don't know, Cod is about the whitest flesh fish that I see in the market.

That's pretty challenging. In the picture, frozen, they look a lot alike. Thawed and in person i could definitely tell the difference. Just a guess, I'd say 1&3=cod 2&4=halibut. Not willing to bet money on that though.

You'll definitely know if you cook halibut thinking it's cod. Fish would be dried out & horrible.

Agree, the striations in #3 make me think cod, and 2 and 4 look similar....my best guess

All I said was, "that piece of halibut was good enough for jehovah."

Hmmm, that is why I thought it was halibut based on the pics I have seen on the internet.

What should I look for once defrosted to tell the difference?
