Crawfish cleaning/purging set up.

What’s your set up to clean/purge your crawfish?
I used to just clean them in the basket and pot, dump the water and refill but that obvious sets me back time wise, and I’ve started to boil thing like potatoes earlier than the crawfish.
I’ve seen people yes like a large plastic tub and a smaller mesh one. Which is the way I’m leaning, but I’m open to other ideas.

A garden hose and a wash tin or an ice chest. Just wash and dump the water and repeat. I don’t understand why washing has to be so difficult now.

Metal tub to wash and soak. Dump into plastic champagne basket to drain. Repeat as necessary.

Put the sack in an ice chest, fill and drain ice chest. Repeat process until water is clear.
I've never had dirty crawfish and I've never had a complaint about dirty crawfish. Don't overthink this.

I have one of these. Works like a charm without a lot of lifting over and over again.

I have one of those as well and works good. Only reason I got one is because my brother didn’t clean out the big ice chest that we always used after our last boil a year ago so that was no longer good. Went to Academy and those tubs were cheaper than an ice chest so went with that.

Crumble some Ex-Lax in the bag the night before the boil. Rinse and cook.

I have one as well. Its the easiest option. Just need to be a little careful. If you leave them too long I find it starts killing them. As soon as the water runs clear, cut the water and drain.

This is what I use the next day.

I took a 100 lb chlorine bucket, drilled holes in the lid and one hole on the side near the bottom. I attached a hose connection to the side hole. I dump in up to a 40 lb bag of crawfish, turn on the water (hose attached), and when the water becomes clear, I simply transfer them to my crawfish pot.
Stole the idea from a video I saw online several years back.

Pour them in a large ice chest with the plug open.
Spray until water runs clear.
Don't overthink it.

I have an old, short, rectangular recycling bin with some holes in the bottom of it. Just lay the sack down in it and hose it a while, let it drain, and repeat. Very simple.

My father-in-law has a system that is flawless, and next to free.
Take your usual washtub, put a brick under one end of it so it's tilted. Empty the crawfish in the tub, take your empty sack and put it on the edge across from the brick. Use bungee cords to tie the empty sack to the tub, half of the sack hanging on top of the open tub to make a 'filter'. Stick your hose in the crawfish and let her rip. Swish the crawfish around with your hands once in a while, pick out dead ones and grass.
Who needs to spend $70 on some fancy tub?

Yep, that's my method. I have a large oval galvanized washtub that can hold 50 lbs. of crawfish easily. Put water in, add crawfish, fill tub to cover crawfish.
Tip and drain and repeat one more time before pulling out the mudbugs to boil.

I have a champagne and a large plastic bucket that the champagne fits into. I fill with water, and as it gets dirty lift the champagne out, and drain the main tub. Literally rinse and repeat until clean.

While I've modified my boiling technique over the years, my prep technique has never changed. It's very simple and old fashioned and it always works.
1) Dump sack of crawfish into ice chest. Open plug on ice chest.
2) Spray crawfish for about 1 minute. Let water drain out.
3) When the water drain slows to a trickle or so, dump some salt into ice chest. Take your paddle, stir around the crawfish a little bit, dump a little more salt.
4) Plug ice chest, fill up about 2/3rds with water. Place the empty sack on top of the crawfish.
5) Drink a beer, start boiling water, season water, add potatoes.
6) When beer is finished, open up plug on ice chest, and spray water for 2-3 minutes, and then keep spraying until water runs clear in the drain (if they are pretty clean, by the time 2-3 min is up, water might be clear already)
7) When drain stops running, tilt chest to get remaining water out.
8) When ready to begin boil, take empty sack off top of crawfish, dump into boil basket, and away you go.
All of these $50 baskets are just an excuse to get you to spend money. This is old school... it's not hard.

Ice Chest and just leave the hose running in the bottom so that the water swirls. I leave it running because I am a little over zealous when it comes to how clean they are. I think it makes a huge difference

I just pour the sack in one of the baskets, and let the kids spray the crawfish until the water runs clean out the bottom. Nothing too complicated to this step.

I like to put the crawfish out on the driveway right before a big rain...no fuss easy peasy
little bastards are always trying to escape though
